And WF apparently doesn't give a shit. :shakefist:

Actually, it just goes to show that on the biggest day of Beck's life, and with a rally of 300,000+ people, that WF doesn't even have a thread about it, therefore this better be the last fucking time I see someone try to accuse a WF member of having a Beck love-in.

    Well, besides Nova. :flow2:

WF has adopted a policy of watchful waiting. It wishes to observe outcomes from the rally, such as whether Beck's pledge regarding where the profits would go actually sees fruition, not to mention the poll numbers, before deciding whether or not to relegate Beck to the category of "entertainer," as they have with Rush ever since the first drug bust.

Once again, garamet has taken it upon herself to speak for everyone here.

Here's an early report on the rally. Oh No, It's from the WSJ!

$5.5 million raised, according to Beck, which nearly equals Special Operations Warrior Foundation fund-raising for all of last year. $2 million in expenses for the rally today comes out of their pocket but they still come out well ahead.

Of course, these are end-of-day numbers and I'm sure there'll be some variation but I'd hope they're pretty close.

Oh, and 300,000? That's the "conservative" estimate of how many people showed up. The Park Service doesn't do counts or "official" estimates anymore. But this picture shows a heckuva lot of people...

Not everyone. "WF" is a fungible category.

Impressive, particularly given DC weather this time of year. And the Special Operations Warrior Foundation is an eminently worthy cause. Having made the announcement, one assumes Beck knows his bookkeeping will be meticulously scrutinized.

What is? The garamet Show? The 300,000+ people saying "enough!"? The 5 million bucks to some private charity? What?

That Glenn Beck is regarded as other than a laughing stock by so many people. His brand of populist demagoguery is tantamount to chanting in unision "Fuck me harder!" Not "enough!".

Your use of the word "conservative" here reminded me of something I have noticed for a while now, but was quite on display this weekend in the media event coverage of this event.

It seems so many articles out there had to include the word "conservative" when referring to Glenn Beck. For instance I think the WaPo or maybe it was the NYT had the following phrase "the rally held by conservative commenter Glenn Beck."

In the same article though, they would mention Al Sharpton, but I noticed that they did not preface a reference to him with the word "liberal." The statement wasn't "a counter rally held by liberal Al Sharpton." It was either "a counter rally held by Al Sharpton", or even "a counter rally held by civil rights leader Al Sharpton." (more vomit blech).

It got me to thinking....why the gratuitous reference to the fact that Glenn Beck is a conservative? And why the double standard? Why the Scarlet Letter for conservatives, but no implied otherification of liberals?

As someone who considers himself mostly liberal, or at least middle of the road, the disparity here seems almost partial in how some people are represented in the media. Hopefully the media can refrain from this sort of behavior and either identify all commenters as liberal or conservative, or none at all.

Man did this piss the Libs off..large turnout,no racist signs or calls for violence against Obama,no remarks by Palin or Beck that the MSM can twist and poor ol'Sharpton could only put together 3000 for his counter rally..oh and the Black Panthers chicken out in their promise to confront Beck.

Now of course by Monday the MSM will tell us how much a failure it was and paint the crowd as a bunch of racists...and praise Sharpton's rally in glowing terms.

Well, I don't know if the rally itself pissed anybody off, but certainly the fact that it was even organized did seem to inflame, for instance, one James Carville.

Listen to this email that I got from him the other day...

Now, I mostly like James Carville as a Clinton supporter, but when he sends emails like these and joins the parade of pisspoor dialogue, he threatens his credibility with me.

I mean really -- calling it a "freak show", the participants "nutjobs", "wingnuts", and saying they are just "spewing hate and paranoia???"

I might have expected that from the bowels of Democratic Underground or you know, your run of the mill Obama supporter -- angry, uninformed, blinded, and full of hate -- but not from the presumably intelligent discourse of political pundits.

Anyway, I wrote James Carville back and spoke my mind about what I thought of his email. I do this time to time whenever I still get emails from the DNC that I find ridiculous, and remind them that they are by sending emails like these, they are having the opposite intended effect of what they were hoping to accomplish. Enough with the :thelurker:.

Is there anybody left out there who can come with an idea that isn't simply just tearing someone else down. How about we all focus on solutions, instead of recrimination?? :jayzus:

Carville has no credibility. All he does is get riled up and gets other people riled up, that's why he was on cable news for so long.

You can bet liberals were primed and ready to call the rally a failure and ridicule Beck as a hack. And if it was a small crowd you bet there would've been at least one taunt thread. But hundreds of thousands of people and MLK's niece agreeing to speak, and suddenly the wind is out of the liberal sails.

Now they're reduced to downplaying/dismissing the rally. But ask a liberal what the event was about, and they wouldn't have a clue. The smarter ones might read the signs for the event and say "restoring honor or some conservative nonsense", but the ultimate point will still sail right over their heads.

Well no offense, but that's just a retarded statement.

James Carville has historically been a very prominent liberal strategist and pundit. He's the guy who coined the term "It's the Economy, stupid." Also came up with "Change vs. more of the same", precursor to "Change you can believe in" meme of 2008 (though I prefer the original). Not to mention his work as lead strategist in getting the Democrats to the Presidency in the 1990's.

Anyway, I understand the need for summary dismissal of any person who might hold a mirror up to the nonchalant facade people are trying to purport in this thread, but might want to think twice before inventing such outright, easily debunked malarkey.

Huh? That seems even more insensible -- the guy responsible for getting Democrats into the WH in the 1990's has no credibility at all with you? Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought you were a Democrat? Is Bill Clinton's Presidency also not credible in your mind then? Just trying to figure out where you stand...

I'm a registered independent, I just tend to vote Democratic because the Republicans locally and nationally produce people who try to destroy my livelihood and infringe on my rights.

I did vote Ron Paul in last year's primary though. Unfortunately, he didn't win. :marathon:

What do you guys think of this take on the rally by John Batchelor (also a conservative)? Was it really an attack of the Zombie Republicans as this author implies?

Interesting point. How Sharpton ever got to be considered a civil rights leader is beyond me. I was merely trying to prod garamet into a reaction there. The 300K number at first glance seems to be on the low side but it's the one given by sources generally regarded as the mainstream media.

I don't know if that's so much true as much as he's articulating what so many people are mad about all the while pointing at things Obama & Co. would really the people not know about. (see also: Van Jones, Commie Extraordinaire). People are mad at their government and have been for a long time. They wanted something different than more Bush; what they got was Obama, which they have clearly stated, isn't what they wanted now that they've seen him in action.

I do think Glenn Beck has started the turn towards making a mockery of himself with his constant weeping like a little girl with a skinned knee, and his talk of doing something (but, as always, never violence), and his channelling the Founding Fathers when their writings aren't quite what he's making them out to be, but overall his message is appealing to a whole lot of people who have had enough of DC and the Republicans and Democrats but who have no other options.

I think the fact that people are listening to Beck is a good indicator that the government is not properly addressing the issues at hand. You see, Beck is the snake oil salesman, the flim flam artist, the traveling "Physician" that sells his magical elixir guaranteed to improve coordination, balance, the nerves. He would be like a pseudo-scientist, offering reasonable sounding advice which may be more destructive than beneficial, and based on feeling rather than fact, but it has the novelty of addressing the issues of what people want to know when the government isn't being more direct and forthcoming.

Beck is an entertainer, posing as a political commentator, posing as a legitimate commentator. It's the work of a televangelist worshiping at the altar of political convenience. He doesn't have to be right, he doesn't even have to tell the truth, he just has to make people feel good, like they're a part of something special. People like to feel needed, like they're changing the world.

People do live in a world where art imitates life, imitates art. People live in sound bytes, they live in 22 minute increments. This results in a more shallow level of understanding, a more vapid ability to grasp central themes, and an inability to see the bigger picture, instead embracing a more conveniently sized image made for their shared benefit. It's a bad trend, but one that has been taking place for some time, not only in the world of politics, but everywhere else. Critical thought loses out to populism, ignorance and fear.

In short, it is unwise to trust Glenn Beck, if one trusts him for anything other than to be entertained.
