I don't know what's worse, not being recognized at all or being lit up like a Christmas tree like Africa and the Middle East are.

Man, even Greenland got recognized.

It appears to me that Canada is recognized as a geographic feature, but not as a country. That sounds about right. Until formal annexation by the US occurs, Canada is not any kind of actual political entity.

I'm not sure why Iran is in the most unsafe bracket, why Botswana is in the "safe" category or why Japan is only in the middle one...

Darn and here I was thinking about going to North Korea. But it says it is dangerous.

Hell I bet North Korea is the safest place on the planet for a tourist. Provided you don't piss the government off.

I know a dude going to Mexico for awesome bass fishing. Trust me, they are huge, and IMO worth the risk.

I love small-mouth! They fight like demons. But my buddy grew up with large-mouth, and he's got a good deal on a trip to huge bass mecca so he's going to have a ball.

The danger in Mexico (and probably many of these countries) is highly exagerated. Yes, if you fit a certain profile (like daughter of a banker), there is a kidnapping risk. If you work for a drug cartel, there is a murder risk. Otherwise, it's a pretty safe place. I know Mexico very well, and have never encountered anything approaching a dangerous circumstance.

^ Ditto. I spend probably a month a year in Mexico on average, for the past 6 years, mostly in Bucerias and Sayulita. Never had any problems. Hell, I've got a high school friend building a house down there. I think it's near the borders (South and North) where you have to worry.

The original article, if you click the map, was from CBC news, so from the perspective of the Canadians they already live there.

Seriously. :wtf: Living in Japan was the first time I walked out around town at night. You even see groups of children as young as five walking from school and taking the train by themselves.

Whoever created this is high on crack.

So you are agreeing with gul that "the danger in Mexico is highly exaggerated" while saying that the place is safe as long as you avoid some areas? Then how it is "highly exaggerated" to rate the country as "avoid some areas"?

And, yeah, Detroit definitely should be red.

I also note in passing that Congo, where I will be going in June, is in the second-to-worse category...

Japan surprised me too. I imagine the rating for Iran comes from the whole "kidnapping hikers and holding them for 14 months under the pretense that they're spies" thing.

Japan is just plain wrong. Going to the raw data source reveals a green rating ("Exercise normal security precautions") with only Fukushima as a possible explanation (but then that's not really a prime travel destination...
