777 would be too big to down mid flight by a MANPAD (Stinger type) probably.
Most likely it would've had to have been downed by a large SAM of the kind that travels with heavy divisions.

But to address that "theory"...

The FAA advised airlines to avoid the area (way back on April 25th) because there is conflict there that could conceivably threaten civil aircraft. If your plan is to get a plane shot down, why issue a warning? If the airlines listen to your warning, they avoid the area and it's hard for your plan to get a plane shot down to come to fruition.

My personal theory? John McCain is organizing a hostile takeover of Malaysian Airlines and the stock price didn't get low enough after he made that first plane disappear, so...

During the last Malaysian aircraft FUBAR it became obvious that not every country offering air service has the same mindset/follows the same rules.
IN THEORY everybody should be on the same sheet of music, but it's not so.
Thus any "warnings" would have likely fallen on deaf ears.

Some "military experts"are saying that the Russian separatists wouldn't have missiles large enough to make it to 34,000 feet so it had to be the Russian military. I'm going to go with that theory cause it's more fun.

What I find sad is the total disregard for human life. 250+ dead, body parts littered over a 10 - mile area, and these subhuman animals celebrate.

The Germans were quietly leading the world into a state of "What-kraine now?", much to Putin's delight as he consolidated Crimea, now this is making the whole thing unavoidable again.

Europe really wants this to go away, and has been desperately trying to pretend it had done. What happens now is anyone's guess. What should happen is this should be used to normalise relations between Russia and Ukraine, and get the Russians stopping playing games in eastern Ukraine. Although going of recent mishandlings by pretty much every power involved, that's not going to happen.

Methinks the pro-Russian separatist movement in Ukraine just shot itself in the foot. Both feet. With a very big gun.

Everyone--including Russia--is going to be distancing themselves, and the position of the Ukrainian government--that these people are terrorists who must be crushed--is a lot more credible. 295 dead innocents makes for an awfully bloody shirt to wave.

Nothing will be done. The West Germans want relatively cheap Russian natural gas too much. Obama can't stand the thought of being a president who "starts another cold war" (or has anything else happen in foreign policy).
