Why put it in quote marks then and cite the source? What you said was that he was "around". That's what you were being asked about. i.e, did you mean he was present during the drafting, or that he was simply alive during the time? Now, if you are the history expert you claim to be, I suspect you would have immediately known the extent of Lee's involvement in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence and would not need to copy out a paragraph from a book. There's actually a much more specific answer you could have given. For most experts it would have rolled off their tongue, so to speak.
Because as a historian, I have been trained to cite sources in quotations. You do realize that historians cite secondary and primary sources when attempting to prove their assertions? In doing so, they quote sources like books. Also, @garamet is often asking for a source, so I provided one. I guess I just assumed people are as knowledgeable as me and the word around would be sufficient, I guess I was wrong.
Considering this is a troll thread started by you, yeah, I'd say there's quite a bit of trolling going on.
Where you were wrong is in your choice of word (q.v. El Chup's post about turkey sandwiches). "Yeah, like Lee was hangin' with his crew in Philly that summer" isn't as clear as your follow up statement. Your assumption that you're the only one here who knows who Richard Henry Lee was is pompous and silly. If you want to be taken seriously, you need to stop being both.
Love it. I'm getting a lecture on citation from this douchebag. Aside from my professional training, it might surprise you to know that I was once a history student as well (albeit before degree level), and what I was taught was that you don't just cite sources. You provide the citation and then go on to explain how it relates to, and support, the argument you are advancing, an approach that set my up for my later career choice. What's more, it speaks volumes that in your response you could not advance the more obvious answer I was hinting at....something that someone claiming to be an expert in the history of Independence, and mopre specifically, Mr. Lee, would likely state without question when contemplating the question put to you by @garamet .
I provided an explanation. The explanation was that Lee was part of the continental congress. I then followed up that claim with a citation. Yes it is in reverse order, but its not an exact science, you can do either or. Yes I used a poor choice of words, i. e. around. Again, I assumed you, WF would know what I meant. I now realize that my knowledge is superior and that I need to be more specific next time. I guess I just assumed it was common knowledge.
Actually, she never said anything of the sort. I was the one who asked who he was. My citation? The first page of the thread. But, suffice it to say, I think we've all come to learn quite conclusively who Federal Farmer is.....
Let me get this straight. Nobody knew what Federal Farmer meant, accept for me. Nobody knew that Federal was likely linked to Richard Henry Lee or Melancton Smith, accept for me. Nobody knew RH Lee's role in both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, accept for me and it's my credibility as a historian that is in question? Only on WF.
Holy shit, all the trolls are out tonight! I didn't realize I was so popular. I knew doc missed me, he expressed butt hurt that I took so long to chime in on his thread, but Ten Loves dick too?
It's ridiculously easy to get under your skin, BJ. We haven't had such a pussy poster on this board since bryce ran off.
In Federal Farmer's lexicon, "historian" means "schmuck who can quote wikipedia without either citing it or understanding it."
Nobody has been as big a pussy as bryce was. IIRC, he even talked about how he let his ex-wife walk all over him. FeralFarmer is fast approaching bryce territory, though.
