I got one of these for Christmas, and while I could look for recipes I thought it might be more interesting to offer people a chance to share what has worked for them. I've used one before but on a limited basis only. Keep in mind this model is pretty small (1.5 L) and I would just be cooking for me or at most one other person.
I bought a 1.5L cooker a few weeks ago and it did manage to fit a Cornish game hen (barely). I threw in some seasoning, carrots, small red potatoes, water, and a few bullion cubes, and it was delicious.
I've been using a slow cooker (same as a crock-pot I think) for many years. No special recipes other than what you can find online and in cook-books though. I do know this - there a lot of soup based recipes generally turn out great. That said slow-cookers recipes can be hit-or-miss. Either they come out great or terrible for some reason. And bell (green) peppers can't cook too long or they come out bitter.
1/2 block velveeta 1/2 block cream cheese 1/2 roll hot breakfast sausage Small can rotella Heat until melted, mix occasionally. Eat with tortilla chips.
Also, as an aside, don't cook dried red kidney beans in a crock pot unless you boil them first or you could get red kidney bean poisoning.
Pot roast is awesome in a slow cooker. Buy a roast, onions, carrots, and some red potatoes. Dump all of them into the slow cooker, along with some diced garlic, Worcestershire sauce (at least a quarter cup) and cover with water. Let it cook on low heat for at least 8 hours (or on high for 4 hours) and you'll have a yummy meal.
Yes pot roast is a go-to classic. And because it's been cooking all day in moisture, the leftovers will always be moist until it's finally eaten in entirety.
This is one I'm still trying to perfect, much to the consternation of my neighbors. Healthy Soup 1 cup of thin brown gravy 1/4 cup of chopped apples 1/4 cup of whole mint leaves 1/2 cup chopped green onions 1/2 cup chopped leaks 1/2 cup of Chinese celery, also known as Japanese parsley or Asian dropwort 1/2 cup sliced red potatoes 1/2 to 3/4 pound shredded dog meat Put all the items in a crock pot and cook on low for 5 hours.
Indeed, the leftovers will taste even better because they've had a chance to soak up all the flavors.
I posted a recipe for dog, and you bitch about bay leaves? Well, let us just take the dog off the table because I assume you've already eaten all your neighbors' pooches trying out inferior recipes. Heaven is taking Campbell's tomato soup, adding a bay leaf (which is not removed), and then tracing a doily of sour cream on top, and serving it with a grilled cheese sandwich made with walnut oil, which has a very high flash point that allows you to to make the skin of the toast super crispy, on top of adding a hint of walnut flavor. Combine the two and the result is sublime. If I had a choice between that and crazy sex with the top ten hottest Olympic athletes of 2014, including Slezena Rodic, I'd take the tomato soup with bay leaf and sour cream and the grilled cheese sandwich fried in walnut oil, possibly on sourdough bread with Australian bacon made from Appalachian free-roaming acorn-fed hogs for the ultimate BLT - served with the ultimate tomato soup.
The best roast is a chuck roast, imo. Carrots, white, russet or yukon gold potatoes, beef broth, and a packet of pot roast seasoning. Brown the roast in a pan lightly beforehand. Set it and forget it! I do mine for 10 hours and the whole house smells unbelievable a few hours in. Get some crusty bread and butter, a salad, and you're good to go! This recipe is best prepared at 5am during the NFL playoffs so there's no gamus interuptus.
Plenty of salt in the Worcestershire sauce. Some of us like to keep our blood pressure in the range recommended by our doctor. You could add other veggies, I suppose, but why cook your green beans with your roast, when you can cook them with bacon?
Throw a bunch of shit in, add water and spices, cook for at least four hours, enjoy. Seriously though, slow cookers are one of man's greatest eat inventions. You can cook pretty much whatever you want. Short ribs and pork butt are my favorite. Whatever you do, use carrots, celery, onions and plenty of water. Then just add salt pepper and your favorite herbs and spices. Slow cookers are the easiest way to cook and absolutely delicious if you do it right. They are really hard to fuck up. Just always make sure there's enough water.
Yesterday I made that corned beef and cabbage recipe. Today I realize that I don't have any Irish ancestry, because to me it tastes like corned beef and cabbage - which isn't exactly a plus.
Thanks, everybody. I ended up getting a pork tenderloin ("roast" flavored ) and threw it in there with some little gold potatoes, onions, and garlic. 8 hours on low should do it.
I should think about getting one of these. Now that I have a nice short commute to work again, I've been thinking I should start cooking for myself instead of getting all my meals from a restaurant or the microwave...
This thread got me craving pot roast, so I have one in the crock pot and it should be ready just about the time midnight rolls around. I tweaked my usual recipe by adding some fish sauce, mushrooms, Liquid Smoke, and Chipotle Tabasco sauce. I'll let you know how it turns out.
I've always preferred pork roast to beef but my wife doesn't eat a lot of pork. Tomorrow I'm making a pot roast, but I'm cooking it on the stove.
I love pork loin in the crock pot, made a Spanish style one about 2-3 months ago. It was so tender, just shaking your finger at it made it fall apart.
