One of the problems we're having with a lot of hostile countries is that they know that if they don't take advantage of the US having elected a weak, anti-Western fool, they'd be more fool than he is. It's like having the police go on strike. No half-way decent gang or cartel is going to treat that as business as usual.

I wonder, if I attained Dr. Manhattan level powers, and flew over Russia, and just killed everyone, just made them all turn into puffs of dandelion fluff, and scattered 'em with a strong wind, and just cleaned the continent of human life with no other destruction....would Dayton be happy or sad?
On the one hand, enemy genocided, on the other....no war.
What would he do with himself?

I don't want to see Russia or Russians destroyed or all killed.

I simply want them humbled so that they are forced to give up all thoughts of glory, grandeur and relevance in the aftermath.

Like the Germans after World War Two.

If the Russians are humbled and give up all thoughts of glory, grandeur and relevance I'm willing to give up a sandwich.

At any rate, I want the Russians to be happy pumping oil and giving themselves pats on the back for Sputnik 1, Laika, and Yuri Garagin

The Baltic states are militarily undefendable and we shouldn't waste time putting units there. Poland, Hungary, SLovakia, and Romania would be good places though.

Russians trying to create a new history doesn't effect our treaty obligations.

Also, you keep saying we're putting troops in when we are not. We are prepositioning equipment. In fact we aren't even going to guard our own equipment, that is how far we going out of our way to NOT put troops in. This is meant to signal to our allies our willingness/ability to quickly set up a 'trigger wire' while signaling to the Russians that we don't want to escalate this.

But then there's NATO Article V. Not defending a member state against an aggressor means they can call it quits anyway.

Do you honestly think that Russians believe this says to Russia, "The US is trying to de-escalate"?

So, how much dick sucking should the west do, before the Russians"de-escalate"? What countries should we sacrifice to them before they play nice? I'm curious.

Yes. Civil Wars are an inherently bad thing. Winston Churchill once said it took a nation 200 years to get over one.

Oh, they are still part of NATO and an attack on them would still result in all of NATO declaring war but we can't defend the Baltic so there is no point in trying. Instead we'd have to blunt the Russian advance in Poland to Romania then push them back WW2 style to liberate the Baltic states.

That gets dicey though because the Russians have nukes so you can't just drive to Moscow.

Neocon uberhawks will be the death of the west, even the death of modern civilisation.

After 25 years of no Cold War, they have forgotten how to play the game. They have forgotten the restraint and caution needed. Indeed many of the younger ones, who were aged from about 5 to 15 years old when the Wall fell, have no experience of the old paradigm and way-of-things at all. They lack the survival skills for a cold war. They don't know when to stop pushing in order to avoid WW3 and nuclear holocaust. They believe their own propaganda.

And when I speak of neocons here, I'm not just talking about the GOP. The neocon superhawk ideology has unfortunately infested individuals in both parties. They are the most dangerous motherfuckers out there, and if anyone ever does usher in that global thermonuclear holocaust we've been dreading for 70 years, it will be them.

I'm not so sure you are correct about the Baltics. I mean, sure, Russian forces would quickly over run them, but we would counter attack from Poland and through Kaliningrad. Presumably we would achieve air superiority fairly quickly, too, facilitating the counter attack.

I think the idea is that the three Baltic nations would be "undefendable" in the sense you couldn't station the right number and configuration of forces in them to prevent a Russian ground force from overwhelming and occupying them.

You CAN defend them in the sense of launching attacks into Russia itself and cutting off supply lines. But most would consider attacking into Russia itself to be a very obvious and dangerous escalation of the conflict.

I have been wondering if someone in authority has maybe read my Wordforge posts about World War Three and thought that it might be a good idea.

So in a way you could say that this is all because of me.

No need to thank me all at once.

You are agreeing with me. Stationing forces in the Baltic states is militarily a waste but you can station them in Poland and later retake them after the Russian advance has been stopped.

You guys realize that if a Russian invasion of the Baltics takes place and then we stage a counterinvasion to retake those nations, it would pretty effectively wreck them completely, right?

Also find it interesting that a US move to head off or discourage such a thing from happening, especially in the face of incontrovertible Russian aggression over the past few years, somehow makes the US the bad guy. The Baltics are NATO signatories. This is effectively saying to Putin "Curb your ambitions, son. Invade here and the Shit Gets Real."
