    No.

But the track record is pretty clear they're in it to either abuse children, help cover up the abuse, or attempt to ignore the abuse.

    Fuck the Catholic Church?!

No, you don't fuck the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church fucks you.

Because, dum-dum, if I want to present evidence of breakfast cereals, we have to at least know what breakfast cereals are.

Do we have statistics that the majority of clergy and/or nuns/and or Catholics endorse, cover up or ignore child abuse? And where does this stand against the frequent request of Muslims to come out denounce terrorism? And where does it stand on the idea that all Jews share guilt for Israeli foreign policy?

You don't need statistics. Use common fucking sense. The minority are the abusers or those who cover up the abuse. The remaining majority are those who ignore it despite the available data.

I welcome your input on a possible fourth category.

Just want to point out that guys like Mel Gibson who think that the church has gone all liberal since Vatican II, have no problem breaking off and forming their own splinter church, complete with priests. Catholics who are appalled at what the church is covering up could do the same. If enough of them did so, the church would turn on a dime.

And once they have committed much of their lives in their jobs/positions it's kind of too late to find another career. Thus they will look the other way - they "go along to get along".

A better comparison would be Al Queda or Daesh members, not Muslims in general. It's not about being part of a particular faith, it's about belonging to a specific criminal organization.

Yes, but your "specific criminal organisation" is the entire Catholic church.

It represents the entirety of Catholics. Are all Sunni Muslims responsible for 9/11?

Your analogy is comparing apples to loquats. Sunni Islam does not have a centralized hierarchy, the caliphate are long gone. Whereas the Church has its own country/city-state, a system of government, churches and representatives throughout the world, the fucking Popemobile, and it's very own Internet country code for domain names.

Something I always disagreed with President Reagan about was sending an ambassador to Vatican City. IIRC prior to that we had no such ambassador.

To me Vatican City is not a real country by any meaningful definition.

In fairness, the church doesn't have a policy to commit child abuse, whereas Al Qaeda do have a policy to commit the various crimes that they do.

Ah, okay. Well forget it's internationally recogised status. Dayton here has decided that it's not a country so I think Americans should demand the withdrawal of their ambassador.

Dayton will now explain the benefits this measure will bring.

    Fair point.

But even an unwritten practice that continues long enough essentially becomes a policy.

They have policies related to covering those crimes up and shielding abusers from facing criminal charges. They're also spending millions to fight laws that might hold more abusers accountable. So yeah, I'd say they have a de facto policy of abusing children.

The Catholic Church is very old and large, and many rotten characters and disturbed people have been part of the history of Catholicism. This continues until this day. If there is a devil, he played his part and continues to do so. The number of crimes and sheer atrocities is mindmelting. The Catholic Church has these sinister, hypocritical aspects. It's a tradition. :diacanu: At its core, it is a dark cult. Even Catholic theology is very dark at its core. I like it. ;) Catholic history is like a summary of the human struggle.

Doesn't change the fact that kiddie diddlers are still far too numerous among the Catholic clergy. The idiotic doctrine of celibacy always attracted sexual "deviants" and made it easy for them to hide. It is very ironic that during the centuries, many homosexuals escaped social condemnation by becoming part of the Catholic clergy. It was their only way out, so to speak.

Americans are often quick to critisize Catholicism, because world history starts with the Mayflower! :P They ignore the fact that all these problems started more than 1500 years earlier. For many Americans, Catholicism is just one demonination (denomination, ahem) among others, ignoring hundreds of years of European history dominated by the Church.
