Oh, that's all right, we didn't have to be competitive with other countries in STEM fields.
Having a generation (or two or three) of ill informed compliant morons incapable of critical thought that don't question their government leaders and burger flipping bosses is much more important.

We spend less than Switzerland and Norway per student for "Annual Secondary Education Expenditures."

Maybe there's a way to get better results, certainly few here (except perhaps Chuck) are in a position to contribute anything more than the emotional reaction they were taught by groupthink.

So, semi-serious question: what does the Secretary of Education actually do? Near as I can tell, the dept. just takes money from the states, mixes up the amounts a bit, and gives it back with strings attached, strings that are (almost?) entirely put there by Congress. I mean, maybe it pays for the DC school system directly? But what else?

Non-serious answer: leads the remnants of humanity to Kobol/Earth.

    Serious answer:

    I. Mission and Responsibilities

The mission of the Department of Education is to ensure equal access to education and to promote educational excellence throughout the nation.

    TOP

II. Functions of the Office of the Secretary/Office of the Deputy Secretary

The Secretary is responsible for the overall direction, supervision, and coordination of all activities of the Department and is the principal adviser to the President on Federal policies, programs and activities related to education in the United States. The Secretary serves as Chief Operating Officer for the Department under the President's Memorandum of July 11, 2001.

The Deputy Secretary focuses on the development and implementation of policies, programs, and activities relating to elementary and secondary education matters. This mission addresses a wide spectrum of interests ranging from safe and drug free schools, special education and rehabilitative services to education of linguistically and culturally diverse students, and promotion of educational interventions, and reforms.

The Under Secretary focuses on higher and adult education policy, postsecondary policy, college aid, and the President's financial aid reforms for the Pell Grant program.

It is time for a new education system anyway. Let her destroy what is left of ours. I am sure they will try to wedge Christian fascism in to whatever crazy bitch comes up with (is it ok to pretend she does not have a real name like she pretends schools do not exist?). In the end we have the internet and as long as that is there any kid with access can look up lectures on science and other subjects. So as long as trump doesn't do something really stupid like destroy net neutrality.........oh yeah he is doing that too.

Ok, at least our history with be corporate washed instead of christian white supremacist washed.

The dept of education receives money from me each month via one of their many incompetent student loan servicers. Hopefully The new secretary forgets how to collect money.

You sure can, probably in your cheeseburger, because the idiot behind the grill will be too stupid to give a shit to follow health codes, if they exist for much longer.
Or maybe he will give you exactly that.

    Bon appétit.

Oh, that's a French term. The general meaning is that you enjoy your meal.

The French are a people who live in the nation of France, which is a country located in Europe.

Europe is a continent, one of the seven that make up the various land masses of the Earth.

A continent is a large land mass. The American continent is one such land mass, known as the North American continent, which consists of 3 nations: Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

All of these things will be complete mysteries for your cook.

    Enjoy your weak sauce.

Frankly it sounds like the Secretary of Education should be a CEO, not a school teacher. The Deputy Secretary seems like a much more educator-centric roll.

DeVos' confirmation is disappointing, but it's also not a big deal. The secretary doesn't make policy; she merely implements policy decided by the president and Congress. When was the last time anyone give a shit about who filled this cabinet position?

In that case Sarah Palin should be Secretary of Education.

    Seriously.

When they have football practice in Barrow, they have a guy with a rifle stand guard to keep the polar bears away.

No, it's not a big deal in nuts'n'bolts terms. Public education has long been going downhill in the US and that slide will now accelerate, as it would have under any other Donaldista appointee.

However, the sheer fatuous ignorance of this woman reminds me no little of Sarah Palin (Yahoo Central). So it's the symbolism -- and it's more than merely disappointing. Of course it's disappointing that only two Repubs had the self-respect to give her the finger. It ain't the sort of backbone that a freakshow like Donald calls for.

So near, and yet so far.
One more and it would have sent a healthy signal. Alas.

I've heard it wasn't as close as you think. That the only reason the two GOP senators broke ranks was that they had been assured that no others would and thus Pence would provide the deciding vote in her favor.

So two potentially vulnerable GOP senators get to make a meaningless "cover their ass" vote by "defying" President Trump yet it makes no difference in the end.
