    ...the actual FUCK?

This is Bizarro Land, right? Because I've lost track of the stories of students with clean records getting kicked outta schools in the last year alone for racist dumbfuckery they did on their own time, let along defacing the actual campus with hate symbols.

    :wtf:

Memories are short. Millions of WWII vets gave their lives to rid the world of Nazi filth once and for all. Now these spoiled brats think Nazi shit is cool and rebellious. That's why we're going to have to do it all over again.

I agree and also remember, not that long ago, when teachers could decide who they gave letters to and who they did not give letters to. It used to be at the teacher's discretion but now it seems everyone gets a letter no matter what just like everyone gets a trophy.

Refuse some students while writing them for others leaves you very wide open for a lawsuit.

The wheels of evolution turn very slowly. So don't hold your breath.

Also, as the poet Philip Larkin put it:
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had.
And add some extra, just for you.

That's why I don't really believe in durable progress. We'll keep spinning in this vicious circle till our time runs out.

What's that scene from? The text 0:30-0:50 is verbatim from Aristotle's Rhetorics, though delivered with extra menace.

This probably has to do with opening the school up for lawsuit. The student could easily turn around and claim their college education and earning potential were damaged by the teacher's actions. This is why many businesses do not give recommendations positive or negative in regards to previous employees. If you bad mouth the employee you open yourself up to a lawsuit from the employee for harming their life. If you recommend the employee and they screw up you may open yourself to liability from the people you recommended the employee to.

His kid had a recommendation and having it withdrawn like that will probably effect his admissions. By punishing the teacher the school attempts to cover it's ass. It is stupid and the kid deserves to be called out, but who wants to be the one to face the consequences of doing something stupid like tale swastikas. Have the courage of your convictions and if you are going to be a racist Nazi asshole own it. Otherwise stop being one.

Damn as a parent I am so fucking glad that my kids never did stupid shit like this in school. Shut the fuck up, do what you have to do to graduate, then move out smartly. I have less and less patience for young people the older I get.

A recommendation letter reflects on the credibility of the writer. If a teacher decides they can no longer stand behind a recommendation, they should be free to rescind it and to state their reasons for rescinding it.

Well, at least the teachers can still say "He was 947th out of 1000 students in a failing school plus he had over 40 serious disciplinary infractions and was expelled twice for bring weapons to school. Unfortunately, he was later let back in despite all of his misdeeds because his mother has excellent skills at crying racism every time her little snowflake ends up in jail."

Telling the truth isn't outlawed, is it?

Actually no. I teacher cannot say that. In fact it is an ethics violation that can (and has) resulted in the permanent revocation of teacher's licenses

Even the truth is banned? :(

They want to prevent disciplining students who break the rules.

They want to force teachers to write letters of recommendation and prevent them from telling the truth in those letters.

They want to hide criminal convictions.

The whole process has become a joke.

Back in the day the first thing they told us is before you ask a teacher for a letter of recommendation you need to ask them if they could write you a good one. A lot of teachers would write one if asked but had nothing good to say about the student and that was the kiss of death. The second thing they taught us was any teacher could say no for any reason or no reason as it is not part of their job. It was an extra which they could do or not do as they pleased.

    I agree

But a mere teacher revealing academic records is not normally allowed. That request must be made to a fully certified counselor. Same with disciplinary records.

Seriously, WTF? You can't even say "He had a solid D+ average even after repeatedly failing several core skills classes, he rarely did his homework, and when he did it was often sloppy and incomplete. Twice he was disciplined for plagerism."

Can you at least mention things like frequent absences and was chronically tardy?

No. At least not officially. Lots of teachers say things "off the record" though.

They can (and have) gotten into trouble for it though.

Nope. Besides, a teacher shouldn't know what the student is doing in the other classes during the day.

FERPA is pretty strict. However, the teacher doesn't need to say the student has a D+ average because the college can see that from their transcript (which the student generally has to authorize the school to release in order to be considered by the college).

Obviously the student is a shitbag, but the teacher wasn't disciplined for declining to write a letter. She had already submitted a letter, then contacted the colleges to tell them what happened.

When I was in middle school some parent, or parents, had to deal with their kid who vandalized the school. They had spray painted satin rules all over the school. Oh, and that is not a spellchecker mistake. I never did find out if it was a roving gang of gays or some really stupid Satanist kids. Maybe it was both. You cannot chose the stupid shit your kids will do.

Back in the early 90's at the high school I went to every teach had a PC on their desk and just by typing your name in they could pull your full record up. If you were on any of the teams or clubs which had a minimum GPA requirement that is how they checked.

    There is another saying

"History never repeats itself. Only historians do".

There is some truth to that. Historians and teachers of history want to be as relevant to modern events as anyone else.

That said to a degree history does repeat itself because humans are very much creatures of habit and followers of patterns
