And here's our monster avengers. Javier Bardem will be Frankenstein's Monster, Johnny Depp will be Invisible Man. The very next flick will be Bride Of Frankenstein, directed by Bill Condon. No official casting yet for the Bride, but word is, they desperately want Angelina Jolie.
It does fuck up one thing, but not really. DC was going to call their live-action Justice League Dark movie "Dark Universe". They can't now. Good, that title sucked for that movie, call it "Justice League Dark", like it's supposed to be.
I dislike Tom Cruise. I agree the current trailer for the film makes it seem like a standard issue action-adventure flick. None of the spooky charm of the black & white original. I disagree that these are "monster" movies. "Monster" movie says King Kong or Godzilla or The Blob to me. Dracula, Wolfman & Frankenstein were the "horror" movies of their era. This attempt at creating a shared film universe has disaster written all over it.
I really don't get where they are supposed to be taking this. Okay, a series of stand-alone movies set in a "connected universe" is understandable, but IMO is basically worthless unless it builds to something. With Marvel, the initial set of stand-alones built up to The Avengers. The next phase(s) are building up to The Infinity War. Unless Universal is gearing up toward a reboot of Van Helsing, I fail to see any logical and/or obvious crossovers. And while I liked the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing, it got panned pretty harshly for taking liberties with the traditional mythos of the various creatures.
Phantom Of The Oprera and Hunchback have been added to Dark Universe. http://www.superherohype.com/news/3...nd-hunchback-of-notre-dame-join-dark-universe
Currently sitting at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, with top critics using terms like "meh," "epic fail," con game," muddled," "a mess," "aimless & lukewarm," "limp & thrill-free." Current projections have it debuting with an underwhelming $35-40 million domestic box office. Yeah, I think The Mummy will be the alpha & omega of the Dark Universe.
Many of the reviews said the same thing. They focused too much on making this part of a cinematic universe and not enough on just making a good movie. Even Tom Cruise couldn't save this. As it stands this will be his lowest scoring movie since 2007. I suspect he may stay away from future 'Dark Universe' movies. Its too bad because I actually enjoyed the 1999 Mummy with Brendan Frasier. It wasnt scary but it was a fun Indian Jones style adventure. Not sure if I will bother with this.
Trying to copy Marvel's blueprint using the classic monster/horror movies never made much sense to me.
It's a shame, I'm really interested in the potential of this Dark Universe, but things aren't looking good. Nobody should be surprised though since Kurtzman is involved. I don't know how he continues to get work.
I saw an interesting idea online. What if Tom Cruise himself had played the Mummy? I think that would have been a lot more interesting and definitely a big break from his usual role as the know it all, physically perfect action hero. Tom Cruise has done some good villainous roles like Interview with the Vampire and Collateral. He was also interesting as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. He'd be the wrong ethnicity but it might still be kind of interesting to see how he'd play some decrepit supernatural horror. He's way too comfortable in the roles he picks. He really should try out some more different types of characters from time to time. Same goes for Will Smith. Has he ever played a villain in anything?
Deadshot, but he was hardly portrayed as a villain. More like the hero of Suicide Squad. Tom Cruise was great as Lestat, it's one of the few roles I can watch him in and allow myself to see the character instead of just TOM CRUISE.
Interview is one of my favorite movies and Crise is great in the movie. Making Cruise the Mummy is what I originally thought they were doing. I thought Cruise was going to be possessed by the actual Mummy, I guess I was wrong.
Yeah, Wonder Woman is gonna squash Mummy like a grape. I think "Bride Of Frankenstein", will turn it around though, they have a much better director for that one.
