Jefferson Davis school to be renamed after Obama

A public school in Mississippi named after Jefferson Davis is being renamed to honor former President Obama.

The school stakeholders voted earlier this month at the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting to rename the school Barack ObamaMagnet IB, The Clarion-Ledger reported.

Ninety-eight percent of the students who attend the Davis Magnet school are black, according to the publication.
“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson said.

The name change is meant "to reflect a person who fully represents the ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves."

“I wholeheartedly agree with the name,” Board President Camille Simms said.

The name change will take effect during the 2018-19 school year, according to the publication.

Good for this school board. Hopefully the ignoramuses in Mississippi can let this one go. But I won't be surprised if legislation is introduced to retain all Confederate era names on public buildings.

I am waiting to see the protests over this. I would be very surprised if people outside the district who have absolutely nothing to do with this don't get their panties in a bunch over it.

Then every one of those buildings should have the phrase "was a Surrender Monkey" added to it, after the Confederate's name.

I got your joke doofus. Just didn't think it was funny. And a bit insulting. IIRC it was President Lincoln who in his plans for post Civil War south recommended "Let'em up easy".

Also, while he was a shitbag in some ways, he didn't fight an entire war for the purpose of keeping black people enslaved. And he did some things that are worth commemorating. Jefferson Davis? Not so much.

National reconciliation often involves burying truths and leaving them buried. Just as in Nigeria they did not give any medals or awards to their soldiers after defeating the Biafra rebellion.

And now, you have some idea of what it feels like to be black and have to go to a school named after a leader of the Confederacy.

And Robert E. Lee said that it was best if things like the Confederacy were best forgotten.
Which means, the damned thing never should have been named after Davis to begin with.

Some accounts, mind you, have Davis being captured while wearing his wife's clothing.

But, I've said this before, and I'll say it again (and I first said this about that sewage treatment plant named after W), I don't think that government buildings, or military ships, should be named after living people, regardless of what I might think of them. I would much prefer that they named it after someone like Thurgood Marshall, than Obama.

They took down the marker to this 1910 transcontinental roadway earlier this year. It was just an old plaque at Horton Plaza but I guess it offended someone.

Also how is a school that is 98% black "diverse"? That would be like calling a 98% white school diverse.

Yes, good old Negro Bill, Nagger Jim's long-lost twin brother who barely got a mention in Huckleberry Finn! :brood:

BTW when I was stationed in Alaska I bought a topographic map for a fly-in fishing trip I took. One of the bodies of water emptying into the river flats was "Negro Head Creek." You see there's a type of vegetation in Alaska called (in 1983 anyway) Negro Heads. They are like big spongy mounds of vegetation growing in mostly wet muskeg areas. Okay they were officially called Negro Heads but that would the more polite term if you get my drift.
Hey, I didn't name the creek, don't shoot the messenger here.

Sorry, I must have missed when Woodrow Wilson took up arms against the US. A more apt analogy you could have made would have been "When are Adolf Hitler High Schools or Hideki Tojo High Schools going to be renamed?" The answer to that is never, because they don't exist, because it's really stupid to name a school after an enemy of the US.

    I'm ok with this.

Obama might have been less than my favorite American President but he was an AMERICAN President, not someone who actively waged war against the United States of America.

WHY the fuck should we have any civil war commemorations at all? California was too busy being a brand new state to join too much on either side.

There's absolutely no reason for that shit here in California. None.

It wasn't even a Civil War commemoration. It was the official name of an early Federal Highway built in 1910. That is all. It was a 107 year old marker about an old Federal highway.

I find that an interesting bit of local history, the road has already been replaced and renamed, so what did a small plaque mentioning it's original name and route along with date of completion do? Some people are beong very extremist in their desire to erase historical events and names they dislike and that is just stupid.

The western terminus of the highway was identified by a monument on Horton Plaza, in downtown San Diego. The formal opening of the highway at this terminus was performed by President Warren Harding. Photographs of this event are available in the archives of the San Diego Union-Tribune and in the files of the San Diego Historical Society. Markers also exist in the California municipalities of Bakersfield, Fort Tejon, Hornbrook, and Winterhaven.[12]

The Jefferson Davis monument on Horton Plaza was removed on August 16, 2017, following the Charlottesville terror attack in Virginia.[13]
    ---------------
It is hard to see an old Federal Highway marker as harming anyone while erasing an old marker is rather lame. Did it hurt anyone between 1913 and 2017? I bet 99% of the people who walked by never even noticed it as it was about the size of a manila envelope.

Same reason Washington State has a [private] Confederate Memorial that went up a year after King County was 'renamed' after MLK (it was originally named after US VP Rufus King).

I'll let you figure out the connection between MLK and the Civil War.

That's not history, that's a statement. 'The Feds can force us to integrate at gunpoint but we will rename the school after those who fought to enslave you. They can force us to give you the pretence of equal protection under the law, but as you walk to the courthouse, look at the monument in front and know what's really going down. They can force us let you vote, but look at this flag over the Capitol and know who runs the state.'

It isn't just the monuments and the flags either. The entire civil war history has been hijacked by white supremacists.

It's not for you, an entitled white boy who grew up in the elitist snob area of San Diego county that banned Jews from living there till damn near the 1980s, to decide what is and isn't offensive to minorities. That historical stuff is all on archive for anyone that wants to find out.
