Do Sanctuary Cities Really Encourage Immigrant Communities To Cooperate With Local Police?

A key defense of the idea of sanctuary cities has been that it helps fight crime because local immigrant communities (specially illegal immigrants) are more willing to cooperate with local law enforcement because they won't fear local authorities will report them for possible deportation.

This is the claim.

But is their any evidence to back it up? From what I've observed, local law enforcement seldom takes any actions against people who assist them anyway. From what I've read and observed (though the largest place I've lived in myself had only 90,000 people) local law enforcement officials are quite willing to tolerate a wide range of illegalities such as drug dealing if the criminals assist them in keeping down violent crime.

When Sessions first mentioned wanting to end this, lots of police chiefs from those cities spoke out saying it made a big difference in cooperation. I'm sure you could Google it.

I have seen several elected officials claim they feared less cooperation but you generally get no meaningful cooperation out of illegals anyway. Remember these are people who run for election making these claims.

Asking for real data instead of politically motivated claims should be the first thing done and yet, mysteriously, it doesn't seem to have been academically studied. Just lots of talk about fears without supporting data.
