Based on google searches, this seems to be a thing that’s been happening a lot in recent years. https://www.google.com/amp/www.capi...ls/ac-cn-chesapeake-noose-0405-story,amp.html
He obviously chose the date to display the confederate flag and a noose to express some aggression towards conventional norms. I didn’t read much past the first paragraph, but what do you think?
When I was in high school they routinely had lots of "dress up" days during football season. When I was in the 9th grade two 11th grade guys (one Hispanic by the way) came dressed as Ku Klux Klansman.
Yeah, I think it’s dumb and probably a little bit trolling. That being said, I don’t think the rebel flag is such a big deal. We had guys in school who had flag t-shirts and flags in the back of their trucks. It was redneck as fuc, but I don’t think they did it for racist purposes.
Not sure where you are in the country, but I think that's important. If I'm not mistaken, I'm guessing that this happened somewhere in Coastal Maryland. Not far from Virginia, where a lot of Civil War history occured. I lived just South of Richmond for 1 year and decided to get the hell out of there because of all the Confederate Flags that I saw there. Regardless of what it is to you or Virginia rednecks, the fact is the Ku Klux Klan co-opted that flag and proceeded to kill more than 4400 black people in the American South over the last 160 years under the banner of the Confederate Flag. To categorize this kid's stunt on the 50th anniversary of King's assassination as "a little bit trolling" is a bit of an understatement. Afterall, if his name was Ahmad bin Tahlall and he brought a homemade digital clock to school on the 9/11 anniversary, the story would have an entirely different connotation.
I admit it's anecdotal, but I've seen far, far more Confederate flags in the Southern Tier Region of upstate New York than I've ever seen in rural Alabama. Stupid doesn't know geography.
Stop acting new. There is no reason for that flag to be flown in places like Ohio (Union state) or New York (Union State) or California (too busy raping Indians and gold to fight in the war) or Utah and Arizona and Alaska (none of them were even states during the war!) to have the flag flown anywhere, except for antagonizing others.
Here's a fucked up thing... One of the high schools I went to (I bounced around a lot in my teen years) had teams called the Rebels. And yeah, they used the stars 'n bars along with a Yosemite Sam like guy in grey. The fucked up thing being this was a borderline rural southern ONTARIO town.
Just a few weeks ago, I was walking my dog down my street. There’s a few houses here that are obviously occupied, but I haven’t met the people there yet. Some of those have thick black curtains that block light from coming out. On this particular night, one of these black curtains was a little cracked open and I couldn’t help but notice a Confederate Flag along with a Nazi flag hanging up inside. So I have a neighbor who is most likely a White Supremacist. I live in upstate NY. I bought a gun and a rifle and I joined a gun club not far from here where i practice shooting every weekend. I hope it doesn’t come to it but I have a feeling that things will get a bit worse before it starts to get better
New York was above the mason Dixon and does not have southern pride like the south. If you saw more in New York you were either in the hills or you wore blinders in the south. I will admit there is a certain inbred racism in the hills of the state, but it is not close to what I have seen in Alabama, Georgia, north Carolina, south Carolina, or even Florida. And Virginia beyond the dc suburbs, and Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi, or Missouri.
Yes, there is a sort of teenage cool thing to antagonize others with racist symbols in New York. Many of those kids are posers or racists stuck in their caves. There is no reason for a Yankee to be sporting the confederate symbol. There is less Yankee vs southern in New York and more city vs red neck if you know what I mean. The north won, they don't have to soothe their butt hurt with a flag because everywhere flies the American flag over the traitorous southern swastika which was not a flag of rebellion as much as it was a flag of oppression by the land owning powerful elite over a race of people. That is called fascism and the rebelling was done by the slaves to their masters, not by some rich white fascists who wanted to keep slaves.
That fits my conception. I'm not even going to pretend that racism doesn't exist in Alabama. I know it does. That said, when I'm in one of the most rural, least densely populated counties in the State and I see a flag on a pole, there's at least a chance that it's just a deluded soul who has bought the heritage not hate nonsense. When I see that same flag in upstate New York, there's only one meaning there.
Sorry Tererun, but Elwood is right. I saw a ton of Confederate flags in Virginia for sure but it was out & in my face.. and while I won’t claim to have gotten a “warm” welcome there, I got the sense that the people there weren’t necessarily hostile towards me & my family but they just didn’t care about my perception of that flag. The fact that my neighbor with the black curtains hangs the flag behind those curtains & ignores me when I wave as he passes my driveway... well... that makes me a little more uneasy. There are 2 other houses on the block with black curtains. I’ve met almost every other family there but none of those houses. I’m telling you, I’m as left leaning as they come but don’t give up your second amendment rights. It will get worse before it gets better. Be ready. I’m one of those African Americans that bought a gun when Trump won the presidency, Senate & House. Nothing shocks me anymore.
I did not say there was no racism in new York, but you are far less likely to have it hit you in jobs and finance. The racism has to hide in new York because people don't put up with that shot as much. You will be fired faster than you can think if you are seen with the confederate swastika because of zero tolerance policies in ny. That is different in the racism happens south.
I don’t know, but I hope I’m ready for anything. The fact that he won this election with one racist diatribe after the other and his poll numbers shot up each time, the dog whistles to and freakin’ Nazis marching up & down our streets and pretending they have a valid political argument... I won’t be shocked by anything and I hope to be ready for anything. What would you do if you saw a crowd of Nazis marching down your street? And winning elections in your town/state/country?
The way that firearm sales shot up when Clinton and Obama won elections leaves you very little room to criticize my decision. This wave of “Trumpism” won in my town, county and in my nation. We are New Yorkers and we know this guy is a con man. The only thing that makes sense to me is that they liked his racist rants. I won’t be caught off guard when he’s sent packing.
I'm always intrigued by the subsets of New England populations, it's just not a culture overall that I'm familiar with. Need to get up there someday. Anyways, what guns did you get, Alphaman?
