It's gonna be a long wait. But like Malarky said, it is a slur against all Mexicans, not just the undocumented workers. I've never met a Hispanic that's used such a term, not even those who are pissed at amnesty measures.
I've met dozens and dozens, who either use the term to refer to illegals or to refer to each other, much like some African Americans call each other the n-word. Doesn't mean that a white boy like Dinner can, though.
Actually it refers to being wet, and having wet backs, from swimming across the river to enter illegally. And that's the connotation I've always heard it associated with. And like @shootER said, Hispanics using it usually refe to others who have entered illegally.

This. What bigots don't get (too many brain cells involved, I guess) is that it's okay to rank on your own group (it mitigates some of the shit you get from Outside), but no one else has the right. Can't tell you how many words there are for "Italian" on my late husband's side, or how many German/Irish slurs I've heard - and used, but only in the right company - on the basis of my mixed ethnicity. "Yer a dumb Mick, ain't ya?" being one of the milder ones. It's gonna be so peaceful around here for the next month. If he's determined to be Flashlight v.2, Dinner needs to learn where the boundaries are.

yep! My wife is a Phoenix AZ native (and pretty much all her family) and a few of her family (including her sister) married Mexicans. And yes, everyone knows "wetback" doesn't mean all Mexicans, only illegals - and specifically recent arrivals - whether they came across the border swimming, hiding in a truck, walking across the desert, etc. But hey, El Chup certainly knows more about this than the people who actually fucking live and work among them. I'm sure the UK is chock-full of Mexicans.

And I'm not making excuses for anything - I'm just explaining that "wet back" means an illegal Mexican 99 percent of the time, and yes Mexicans who are native to the US quite often call other Mexicans wet back if they are illegals.
