Right now they're saying four wounded and two fatalities. My sister works there, but she's safe. She had just left when it happened.

Interestingly, she said they train for this all the time, and they're trained not to hide, but to run or fight. I don't know if that's just the training that the faculty and staff get, or students as well.

They finally updated our active shooter advice at work to include fighting back, tho as a last resort. Used to be run, hide, cower, call 911 if you can.

Weird, at schools I attended and the educational establishment I work now I've never heard any discussion of what to do in an active shooter situation.

    ^Me either!

Can't even imagine what's fucking up the minds of America's youth. Oh, wait. It's teh gunz !! Not Omar or Sharpton, not America's ISIS aka Antifa (or the top candidate on the left insanity in praising them!), nothing to do with increase in suicides, opioid deaths, less faith, less family, segregationist colleges, bigotry at Harvard and throughout mainstream left and far right, or clickbait media hate-based business model.

Lots of public schools these days make a big deal regarding active shooter drills and the correct procedures. I used to joke to my students that in the event of an active shooter situation I would be under my desk as it is made of steel and could probably deflect quite a few rounds.

I didn't either when I was in college in the late 80s and early 90s...when gun crimes here were at their highest.

I did. It was right between the "what to do if you're hit by lightning" and "how to spend your lottery winnings" classes.

you know that bullets whistle right through car doors, right? So I'm guessing any high octane rounds a bad guy might be using to kill a bunch of folks might go right through your desk too.

No bailey, just a preemptive strike against the transparency of the agenda (click-bait, sow hate).

There are far worse conditions in America that could stand improvement (Chicago homicides, spillover of a failed state on the southern border, the fact that AOC was awarded a 'participation trophy' called a college degree, etc.).

No doubt they would penetrate. But they would lose a lot of energy in the process and be less likely to be lethal to me. Not that it matters. Most of the schools I've taught at would not be likely targets of a mass shooting.

I also had a kid in class who sometimes wore a bullet resistant Kevlar flak jacket to school that his moms boyfriend (who was in the military at that time) had given him.

I used to joke that in the event of an active shooter I was going to grab him and hold him in front of me. We started making jokes about him jumping in front of me if the active shooter thing ever happened.

better that kid than me! I hate wearing kevlar vests - they are heavy and hot. Also they aren't designed to stop bullets, they are designed to protect against "indirect fire" thus the nickname
"flak vest". Granted the ceramic plates in the newer vests will stop bullets to a degree but that makes the vests even heavier. Luckily our unit never had the newer vests with plates.

Shoes, I know this is close to home and am very glad your family is safe.

I was referring to a very negative trend in recent years that might be worth understanding better, see chart. My underlying point is the absence of coverage - along with those other topics I mentioned (failed college system and Mexico), presumably (according to me) because it doesn't attract widespread interest and its coverage is not a part of a profitable business model.

You chose to show per 100 000 people, which is fine.
so let's stack it to more than two other cities, shall we?

I did. I was in middle school when Columbine happened. We did regular training afterwards. Officials weren't assumed when I asked if I should write my name on myself so the police could easily identify my body.

^It was not my intention to mislead. But I value and appreciate your skepticism and the addition, I dislike misleading data.

I still wouldn't sing praise of victory, but by all means explain how a recent drop in homicide rate to still well-above-avg. changes the point - everything is now copacetic iyo?

Far from it. But I don't find the amount of media coverage lacking, and resent seeing the situation used on a national level as a political football.

Please point me to the home page of a national press agency that has covered anything to do with Chicago murder in past month. Two?

You don't consider "coverage lacking" when national press has effectively ignored this issue at the same time as, say, covering what turned out to be a complete hoax for over two years on a nearly 24-7 basis?
