While I want to agree, I've learned to never underestimate the average person's ignorance when told how GREAT everything is doing. The whole idea of late stage capitalism works off the idea that you too can be rich, if only you keep working hard! It's almost yours, you've almost got that carrot! Just keep accepting that low wage and unpaid overtime! You're going to be an entrepreneur!

I hope you're right, but 83% of republicans think he's doing a good job.

He'd have to come out as a gay, anti-gun abortionist to fuck this up.

My guess about the most likely turncoats:

    1. Romney - obviously, Trump is pretty hated among Utah Dems and he has six years until an election which he'll be a slam dunk winner in
    2. Grassley - retiring at the end of his term I think
    3. Roberts - also retiring, Kansas shifting away from hard right
    4. Alexander - retiring, nothing to lose.
    5. Issickson - leaving at the end of this year.
    6. Murkowski - broken with R's before
    7. Paul - when he sees the winds shifting
    8. Burr - the one guy in the caucus who might have a little character in which he can be pushed too far even if it hurts his election

HM: Fischer - if Sasse give her cover by flipping too

I can't get to 20 though, unless the whole party decides to dump him en mass

Indeed, but Trump oversold himself to the "economically disaffected" by promising to fix everything BUT...
    Factories and farms still closing
he's in court trying to further wreck their health care coverage
he dished out big tax cuts to billionaires
he hasn't got ANY thing he can't point to and (honestly) say "i did this for you"

And his likely opponent has identified literally every single thing such people are discontent about and said "all this is this way because corrupt politicians sold you out to the mega rich and I have a plan to fix it." Even Steve Bannon has said that she's running on a platform every bit as populist as his was.

Now, it's true no Dem can get the bigots and Dominionists away from him - but that's only about 1/3 of the vote. The rest is up for grabs

The idea thst things are the same as in 2016 is absurd. Trump has been losing support over time. None of the dems are hillary so he won't get that boost. Now he has a huge shift in the people who think he violated the law based ion transcripts he had written and released. You couple that with the increased excitement in dem candidates over hillary and he is doomed. Unless something big comes up for him he is toast.

To me there are two necessary conditions needed:

    1) Fox News has to allow Trump to be attacked.
    2) Enough Republicans have to turn on Trump.

If the Republican base isn’t allowed to see the evidence against Trump and if it isn’t fellow Republicans making the case to them then this goes no where in the Senate.

I have a feeling that dump is coming. Faux news is openly fighting between republicans and trump minions. They have brought Rush back from the dead to fight faux news directly. Eventually this is going to lead to an exodus by the trump lemmings like @Zombie away from faux to the fringe conspiracy sites. Faux will take the moderates. Then it becomes a war to take bavk the right by the more respectable moderates over the crazy alt-right fringe. We are already in the first battles. You can just walk trump off with the tea party and blame the radical right wing Nazi party for the problems and look like you have cleaned your act up.

To do that you have to decide to impeach trump and draw that line against the old tea party nazis. They have to take back their moral idealism or the left will look like the party of law and order while you openly attacked the constitution. My thought is they will use a little over twenty republican senators and the rest will bitch and moan as trump goes down so they look good in the tea party red states.

This always seemed like the idea behind trump. Get the rich tax cuts passed, see what else he can accomplish towards fighting the left, and then hang every bit of dirty laundry they can on him and separate pretending they were never big followers of his, and the entire trump presidency was the product of radical right wing terrorists. It would make some sense rather than going down with him for the sake of a fringe group that will vote republican even if they impeach. Who is the alt right going to back if they want to have some connection with power? We all saw the disaster of the tea party and how fast they were squashed.

Fox Business had Corey Lewandowski on and even they had to ask "Corey, did you have a little Merlot with dinner?" because the guy was slurring his words.

    https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/464140-ignore-the-hype-this-is-not-an-impeachment-inquiry
There is no impeachment inquiry. There are no subpoenas.

You are not to be faulted if you think a formal inquest is under way and that legal process has been issued. The misimpression is completely understandable if you have been taking in media coverage - in particular, reporting on a haughty Sept. 27 letter from House Democrats, presuming to direct Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, on pain of citation for obstruction, to cooperate in their demands to depose State Department officials and review various records.

The letter is signed by not one but three committee chairmen. Remember your elementary math, though: Zero is still zero even when multiplied by three.

What is portrayed as an "impeachment inquiry" is actually just a made-for-cable-TV political soap opera. The House of Representatives is not conducting a formal impeachment inquiry. To the contrary, congressional Democrats are conducting the 2020 political campaign.
    .....
Moreover, there are no subpoenas. As Secretary Pompeo observed in his fittingly tart response on Tuesday, what the committee chairmen issued was merely a letter. Its huffing and puffing notwithstanding, the letter is nothing more than an informal request for voluntary cooperation. Legally, it has no compulsive power. If anything, it is rife with legal deficiencies.
    .....
But standing committees do have subpoena power, so why not use it? Well, because subpoenas get litigated in court when the people or agencies on the receiving end object. Democrats want to have an impeachment show - um, inquiry - on television; they do not want to defend its bona fides in court.
    .....

Democrats are mulishly determined to ram through an article of impeachment or two, regardless of whether the State Department and other agencies cooperate in the farce. Their base wants the scarlet-letter "I" attached to Trump. The party hopes to rally the troops for the 2020 campaign against Trump (although smarter Democrats know it could boomerang on them).

If Democrats truly thought they had a case, they wouldn't be in such a rush - they'd want everyone to have time to study it. But they don't have a case, so instead they're giving us a show.

I am sorry, I had a couple of teeth removed and faking a smile and pleasant face is a bit difficult at the moment. On the bright side I can spit a pretty good spiteful blood filled blob.

I hope that does not offend too many people as I totally value fake nice.

So are the Dems not impeaching or are they rushing impeachment? The author (editor of National Review and Fox News contributor) of that opinion piece seems confused.

Here's some background on that author:

Also relevant, he wrote the book Faithless Execution: Building the Political Case for Obama's Impeachment (Encounter Books, 2014).

Clearly a mature respected and impartial legal scholar.

@Zombie: if the president actually shit his pants, he would have had a new pair of pants on by now and the soiled pair would be in the laundry. There is no way he is wearing an adult diaper that could contain all of his shit. As Democrats haven't even bothered looking in Trump's laundry room, clearly the president did not shit his pants.

Sooo, @Tuttle and @Paladin are busy talking about something - anything - else (this is where they chime in with "Some of us have a LIFE!") whereas poor @Zombie is left holding the fort alone, fancying himself like John Wayne swinging his rifle stock at the Evul Messicans after the ammo runs out.

Strangely enough, I agree with Baba. Fox, like most all of the news channels, mostly gets it right with "this is what happened." Where they (and the others) go off the rails is when they get into "and this is what it means."

Haven't you heard? Fox News was bought by Disney, and now they're the enemy*. Just look how Shepard Smith is so mean to Trump.

*Yeah, I know. But most of my Trump supporting friends (which means most of my friends) actually think that. I've tried correcting them, but they aren't having it.

Zombie's back is strong enough, and he apparently was blessed with a higher tolerance to toxic idiocy (or more disposable time to fritter away on farce).

As for reading between my lines, that would earn an F (failing grade, in case that's been redefined). Partly my bad for not being clearer - the point is not "I have a life", but "if you have a life then you realize Trump isn't the monster under the bed" that they told you he was going to be. Even Nova could only come up with some kind of three-degrees-of-separation to describe any direct negative impact Trump has had on her life, outside of vicarious hurts or sympathy pains.

Two ways off the top of my head that Trump has had a negative impact on me...

    1. We lost a ton of money on one of our farms (row cropping soybeans), because of the China tariffs...but he says it'll be worth it in the end, so we'll see*.

    2. Whenever he gets pissed off at the Washington Post and tries to fuck with Amazon in retaliation (I own stock).

Other than that, I'm a white, straight, male, gun owner, so I'm good for now other than the sheer embarrassment, but I'll get over that.

I'm not participating in this thread because there's nothing to this--for Trump, anyway; maybe a different story for Biden.

How does this story look bad for Biden? From what I can tell, he was only the point man for the US along with other Western countries and the World Bank. He was just executing their agreed upon policy, which was that aid would be conditional upon dealing with the rampant corruption. The investigation into the company that his son was on the board of wasn't even active, and the Ukrainian Attorney General said neither one of them did anything wrong.
