I'd go with a variety of factors starting with they were outside, so he'd have had a heavy coat on, that two on one there may not have always been a clear attack on a moving target, and that as the article says a "butcher knife" it may not have been all that sharp-and was likely just the closest thing at hand once shit started.

He did flatline at one point I hear, but I suspect for all that getting stabbed or sliced in the right spot jsut once can drain you pretty quick, there's plenty of space between those where it won't kill you on its own.

a heavy coat? Then don't attack what the coat is protecting! Think groin, groin, groin. He's probably going to protect his head, neck & chest, but his hands can't be everywhere! The groin (or even the lower abdomen) doesn't have as much protective muscle and bone but still has plenty of nerve endings & arteries. The bladder is very easy to puncture also. If the guy turtles up in the fetal position stab upward along the inside of his legs - you'll hit "pay dirt" soon enough! A few stabs to the testicles & rectum and you'll break down his will to fight no doubt about it!

I was just discussing basic common sense effective fighting tactics that apply if you're trying to kill somebody with a knife. And if you aren't trying to kill them why are you using a knife to attack them?

Though I like to razz the guntards because they are so easily triggered and quite obviously in need to restricted access to guns due to their mental state making them unsafe, I would have a hard time saying there is no place at all for guns. This is america, and I do see a place for the ability to do risky activities. That being said my position is not even close to personal possesion of guns and carrying them in public places. I can see secure gun ranges where people could use them for recreation and sport under supervision and secured from the public. I might be able to see personal gun possession after real training and under government supervision that looks a lot more like how probation and parolees are watched and inspected. I am talking drug and psychological tests, no children in the household, and the ability for government agents to call upon you to produce your firearm at any time, and to inspect the location it is kept at any time they feel the need to. Not to mention an immediate suspension and seizing of your firearms upon being charged for any misdemeanor or above, and remobval of your licensing if you fail to appear on any charge, including traffic violations, at court when scheduled.

However, I think there should be places with security that offer up the fun of recreational shooting for those who wish to participate in it.

no matter, I'm not trying to defend my friend's attackers' incompetence. Just glad that they had nothing more effective than kitchen hardware to attack with. If they had gone there with the intent to hurt him AND had easy access to firearms, I'd likely be down one on my friend list.

Lots of people get stabbed as punishments, warnings, intimidation, even simply making a show of who is in charge. @Spaceturkey said it was about a debt, perhaps they wanted him alive in order to be able to pay it off? Maybe it was a scare tactic that got out of hand as tempers frayed? Maybe they had no intentions at all and it just spiralled as such situations often do?

In either case it does bring into question the whole "but we'd just use knives to kill people" argument.

Of course not, but the person would still know they'ed been warned. A warning stab that doesn't hit would have to be accompanied by some sort of auditory cue, like "Warning Stab!" every time you did it in order for the message to sink in. And that would just look silly.
