Man, I can see some heads exploding over this one . . . linky.

The basic story is that an op-ed author wonders about the possibility of George W. Bush endorsing Biden. I could actually see Bush doing this, as from what I've heard he thinks Trump is a disaster. But can you imagine the reaction around the Republican party? It would be glorious.

The current Republican party would throw Bush under the bus in a heartbeat to protect their golden spray tanned calf.

It would be the single best act in the 20 years since he took office.

Won't make up for the 5000 dead troops or the countless more brown people who died for oil, but it would be a start.

    Also, lulzy :ramen:

Biden and Bush have more in common with their political views than Bush and Trump do.

It'll be so awkward in five years, when Bush runs into Trump and Ellen hanging out together at baseball game. :(

Most likely is the Republican party would disown Bush.

We had a similar situation here a few years ago. Malcolm Fraser was Australian PM from 1975 to 1983. He led the Liberals (our conservatives) and by the 1990s was publicly criticising their policies. In the 2000s he very publicly spoke against the conservative governments foreign policies, and resigned from the party after Tony Abbott became leader. By the 2010s he was outright endorsing and supporting Greens candidates for the Senate, basically saying that while he didn't agree with them on many things the things he did agree with them on were incredibly important.

Very few Liberal party members cared, and largely disowned him.

I wonder. Donnie-boy is making Dubya look good by comparison. Dubya is part of a legacy, and also essentially harmless. It's not as if he's going to run for anything again. But if the GOP anoint him as some sort of Elder Statesman, he could try to salvage some dignity for the few centrists who remain. Turtleman has to choke on his own vomit first, though.

Meh. The Bush presidency is seen as a failure from pretty much all sides. At this point the Bushes are persona non grata within the Republican party. The reaction would be more like "As expected".

Seems like the retconning that happened after Nam. Apparently there was no one in the U.S. of A. who was for the war. The same thing's been happening with Iraq.

"Who, me? Nah, I was never for the invasion of Iraq" was a classic Dayton dodge.

Guess he must have left some Kool-Aid in the back of the fridge for @T.R

Even leaving the politics aside, Dubya is seen as a class act for his handling of the turnover to the Obama administration and his personal manner. He's friendly with both Clinton and the Obamas and has really kept out of the limelight since leaving office, aside from the unavoidable stuff like his father's death.

If literally every living president endorsed Biden (or whoever the DNC nominee turns out to be), that would be amaaaaaaaaaaaaaazinng.

But sadly, it still might not be enough. Even having performed as poorly as he has, Trump still has at least a 40 percent chance of re-electionn.

    Yup.

Don't get me wrong, he belongs in the Hague, but he also respects the systems beyond himself. When Trump leaves either in a few months or a few years I wouldn't be surprised if he tells his staff to trash everything.

Let's see......Jeb Bush with all his money didn't place higher than fourth and was done after South Carolina. Pierce Bush, who ran for congress, didn't make it past the primary becoming the first Bush to lose a Texas race in forty years. But you go on believing that the Bushes are still relevant to Republican voters. :techman:

I have to agree with the conservative whack jobs here. Dubya hasn't been relevant to the Republicans since he left office. It's the party of Trump now. Ride or die, baby.

Yeah. It's hilarious they all think Bush has any pull with the most important people in the GOP: The voters.

Lanzman, no one cares about Bush except for the Never-Trumpers and they are a tiny well ignored minority in the GOP.

Let him come out in support of Biden. It would be great for Trump because he could point out all the ways Bush was weak.

Like when Bush tried to sneak amnesty through, how Bush stood by and let the Democrats slander him daily and he never did shit to fight back*, how Bush appointed John Roberts to SCOTUS someone who is not well liked by the right because he's a waffler and all the other things that Bush was weak on.

But wow Bush was a class act in turning over the keys to government to Obama. Surly all the voters will appreciate that.

*People begged Bush to fight back against the Democrats he never did. It's part of the reason so many people love Trump. He actually fights against the Democrats.

Sure. He lies, taunts like a child, and lies some more, but at least he's fighting those Democrats. Keep up the good fight, Mr. President.

I have a hard time believing that Bush endorsing Biden would change very many votes.

But I would still love to see it, because it would be a very clear statement that the Republican Party of today is not the Republican Party of fifteen or twenty years ago. (Not that it was all that great even twenty years ago, but it has seriously changed for the worse since...)

You would see a lot of older republican voters actually vote for a dem. I have a feeling some are going to just sit out. The problem would be on the other side. You would really push the progressives away. Dubya cuddling up to Biden would be a huge reminder Biden is very conservative and establishment white. I don't know if you would knock black people off of Biden, but that would sink him with millenials and OWS types.

Now I really want Bush to endorse Biden.

It would probably help Biden and that would be a good thing. But it does not say much for Biden that someone like Bush would be prepared to support him. And it would be unfortunate if this were used by those determined to rehabilitate him to further that process.
