So there is tis series on Netflix called Dear White People. I want to recommend this for the right given it portrays the black side of things from their point of view in a way that is understandable from outside that perspective. I think it is well acted, and well written. It is certainly written from a younger perspective being it happens in college so I had to focus on keeping up with some of the more modern terms. I don't think they were black terms as the show does do a good job of showing what things mean in that sense. I think the series does a good job of not getting into the extreme arguments for the most part, and they do present multiple views on how things could be handed. I found myself enjoying the characters and actually thinking about what is good and bad to do when they have an incident where campus security is called on a altercation and things go bad. This really gives a perspective of the different currents of politics and racism and how they push and pull people of color. Not to mention some really interesting looks at the GLBT mix, and even a nerd getting bullied for dressing up as geordi laforge, and how he was growing out of that high school thing into a world where he could be powerful.
Oh my, there are three seasons. I am so late to the party. However, this series is a must for any person who is woke or wants to be,
I’m halfway thru S1. This is extremely well done, for a show I’d never heard of until it the service recommended it. Contrary to the title, it’s not a woke sermon. There’s a lot of conflicting angles and philosophies presented vis a vis racial issues, and the drama and acting are solid. Thumbs up.
That may be true, but imagine a show called Dear Black People. How well would that be received and how many people would dismiss it without even watching it? The title alone was an instant turn off.
You didn't see it as the naturally respectful form of address from other to their superiors? Hmm. You're slipping in one sense or another.
I would definitely watch a Netflix show called Dear Black People just to see how offensive it was. Controversy is an effective hook.
White fragility? Please. Dear White people is a pretentious title that presumes the show is painting a broad brush.
Congratulations, you're the target demographic of FOX Network. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but my reaction is along the same lines as Lanz and the undead Injun -- it reads like someone is going to get up onstage and look for popularity by just setting the Offensive knobs to High and sticking it to the target group (here, whites) in order to get a response out of their buddies in the crowd. Or it could be a polite, reasoned, tongue-in-cheek explorations of complaints against the target group . . . but guess which one I expect from contemporary culture?
Beware the third season. I am not really sure what show it became, but it certainly was not the one I was watching.
Can you two take this bullshit to the red room? I am willing to say FF is probably not the audience for the show and leave it at that. I cannot say that the show is not a "woke" portrayal of issues confronting black people at prestigious universities.i It does touch on some things that are similar to current events to show some black perspectives on them. The show seems to be made to have that portrayal for black people, and for white people who want an entertaining way to see things from that perspective. It is not meant to be all inclusive, but I think it incorporates the views in a way that comes across well and puts the viewer into a similar position. Yes, it is going to make people who do not want to hear it uncomfortable. But it works off of the same method people like richard pryor, eddie murphy, chris rock, and david chapelle have used to bring their perspective into entertainment to give us an idea of what it is like. But it is not coated in the comedy that makes it easy for a person to see when they are uncomfortable and probably a part of the system that causes the problem. I would say for white people this is for the more "woke" person who wants to see some of the perspectives it offers. On that end, it is about a bunch of black people in a well off college, and separated from their community at home. There is not a lot of going back to the hood to see the poor ones, but it does not have to. These are issues that go along with other struggles.
Let’s cut to the chase. Post #15 exists because he wants to once again troll in media central by implying that my family are Nazis and once again moderators like @Tuckerfan &tuck don’t do jack shit about it, but are in on the joke, thus abusing his power as usual. Then days later @shootER will show up and “warn” everyone l. How about some actual moderation in this rom, FFS! But that won’t happen and the usual suspects will continue to be allowed to do whatever they want because the owners are lazy pieces of shit.
Hey, don’t tag me in your bullshit. I don’t have mod powers in this forum and Worf’s comment was hardly pushing any boundaries as far as MC rules go. And while I know you won’t believe me, I’ve pushed for folks to be warned for things they’ve said to you in MC. But like I told Dayton and OF, if you don’t like the way you’re being treated then you’re free to leave. If you keep staying, the only thing one can conclude is that you like the abuse.
You know damn well where he was going with his comment, otherwise you wouldn’t have found it funny. Whatever mod powers you do have, they’re shit because I don’t see you moderating anything, but you sure as shit participate in the trolling.
Again, nothing he posted violated the rules of MC. The only section of the boards that I have mod powers are Techforge and the Help Desk. Not a lot happens in those that I have to worry about. It’s pretty clear that you just want the thinnest issues to kvetch about. If what someone posts annoys you, just put ‘em on “Ignore” and be done with it. Or leave. Both are pretty simple solutions.
