He actually laughed at the joke initially then, after getting a glare from his wife, stomped onto the stage and assaulted a comedian. From laughing to violent rage in less than a second because wifey was not amused.

The audience can be forgiven for applauding; who on Earth would think such a thing was real?

Rock kept his composure and even managed to keep the show rolling with a quip. Big respect!

You're correct that someone deciding not to "press charges" doesn't necessarily mean the police/prosecutor won't still pursue it. But a victim of assault/battery still can bring a civil lawsuit.

I heard the whole thing was staged. Apparently Smith and Rock are most of the witnesses are paid actors.

From the video of him laughing at the joke before the incident and him not being escorted out of the building after the incident had me suspicious. I thought it was all staged until the Academy announced that it was holding a review with possible consequences for Will Smith. And we don't know if Chris Rock is going to press charges or not. Either way, I'm still not watching the Oscars

Lost in the aftermath of #slapgate is how, during Will Smith’s acceptance speech/apology, the Oscars repeatedly put up a full screen graphic over a group shot of the Williams sisters and their friends/family because the dress one of them was wearing revealed a little *too* much of her.

Not quite Janet Jackson at the Super Bowl, but someone in the directors booth saw it and put up a logo until they could re-frame the shot.

They went from using a group reaction shot to much closer individual shots of Venus and Serena.

Apparently, when the cameras were pointed away from the audience, Denzel Washington and The Rock came over to Smith to talk to him about what happened. Denzel has a particular gravitas amongst black actors, and The Rock is pretty frickin huge (also small for a Samoan).

She's got a point. Last month on his podcast, Christopher Titus talked about a show he'd just done where a heckler got violent, not only with the bouncer but with Titus. Given the stupid shit folks do to get followers on things like YouTube, etc, it seems like only a matter of time before someone figures they can make the big time by punching a comic.

So.... Yeah. I always liked Will Smith, but now, not so much. I get it, Smith felt insulted for his wife. But he laughed at first, it wasn't until she did the eye roll and he saw it that he acted. Too many people end up hurt or dead because of that shit. However, my respect for Chris Rock had gone way, way up for how he handled it. Even when Will was stomping up to Chris, Chris kept his composure and right after the slap (only a bitch will slap) he still kept his composure and kept it light hearted.
