as for BQ not assimilating the cop. She's pretty weak right now, and the cop isn't exactly peak physical condition either (figure a steady french diet and possible smoker). Doubtful she has the resources to maintain a collective at the moment, let alone one that needs renovations...

he was of more use alive than assimilated and a liability.

Wouldn't that make phasers set on stun obsolete?

Are people just expected to praise these new shows blindly rather than discuss the actual episodes? Why is it I'm the only one who get dog piled here when I, God forbid, question the true genius of Alex Kurtzman? I guess I'm not supposed to have an opinion other than I loved it, it was so great, NuTrek is a masterpiece and as Kylo Ren said in The Last Jedi, "let the past die. Kill it if you have to. It's the only way to become who you were meant to be." Praise be NuTrek, it is to be unquestioned.

It's set in 2024, just come up with a more realistic disease. The weird unrealistic space diseases at least sound plausible on a space ship with multiple species' on board, not on Earth circa 2024. I get that they wanted to make Soong a mad scientist type, again and at least they alluded to the Eugenics Wars, but I thought the disease was too ridiculous.
La Sirana. There's no indication that she can't try.
She found a way to get into Jurati's mind or whatever.

All the more reason to assimilate people.

What I find weird is Q went back in time, did something to mess up the timeline which causes humans to become super Xenophobic, yet Cochrane still invents warp travel and they still make first contact with the Vulcans. Fine. Adam Soong somehow becomes the figure head of the human first movement. This leads to the Confederation we see in the first episode. Q gives them a chance to fix it, but is also actively manipulating things so that Rene Picard doesn't go on this mission. Why is this mission so important to humanity? It's a pioneering mission, okay, but what else, is it some driving force that leads to changes in humanity that eventually leads the Federation? How is more important than First Contact? Why is Q simultaneously trying to fuck with Rene while also giving Picard a chance to correct a timeline he messed up for the purposes of teaching Picard some sort of lesson? What lesson does Picard need to learn at this point? I know we have to see where this is going, but at this point, it doesn't seem to make sense.

    :sigh:
Phaser on stun is purpose designed for its task.
I have a hobo knife, y'know, a Swiss Army Knife but only with cutlery stuff.
Theoretically, I should be eating with that all day, and my kitchen cutlery should be obsolete.
    I'd rather use kitchen cutlery

As has been pointed out, there apparently is a variation of this disease in the real world. But even if there weren't, who cares? It's sci fi.

Yep, got me that I made a flub. It's La Sirena, not "La Sirana."

Jurati initiated the contact w/ the BQ mind by physically jacking into her. I think it pretty much goes without saying that the BQ was limited in being able to assimilate people and that if she could, she would.

We don't know if in the Confederation timeline, Cochrane invents warp travel for humans or someone else did, when/how First Contact happened, etc. All we know is Q did/is doing something, some of what Q did/is doing is known (meddling with Renee Picard and blackmailing Soong) and because of one/both of those things or "butterflies" from one or both of those things, the Confederation was born and Q seems to have lost his powers.

We don't know if the change is "more important than First Contact" or what the "lesson" is, or even if there is a "lesson." What Q had said is that being in the Confederation timeline is all to force Picard to undergo some form of penance. Is Q lying? Exaggerating? Confused? If not, this is not about teaching Picard a lesson, but rather making him suffer. We will have to wait to see what the case is.

No one expects Picard or any Trek show to be praised blindly. It has nothing to do with questioning Alex Kurtzman/nuTrek being off-limits. You can see for yourself that not everybody gets criticized when they point out flaws in this and other nuTrek shows. See comments made by UA and Zor Prime a few pages back for some examples.

So maybe it's that the points you raise are less well-thought out than other people's criticisms. Or maybe everyone's just picking on you. You make the call.

My theory is that the Europa mission involves some sort of previously undocumented first contact with another species, and that if Renee is the one to make contact then the encounter goes well and likely remains a secret. If someone else goes in her place, then first contact goes badly and humanity starts venturing out out into the galaxy on a war footing, maybe skipping WWIII and never learning a valuable lesson from it. :clyde:

So I did rewatch the episode and Seven does try to stop Raffi from messing with the timeline even though Raffi used a phaser to break into the cop car, why not use the tricorder to hack the computer? Anyway, Seven then proceeds to let all of the people on the bus go. This is their obvious commentary on the immigration crisis. Do they consider that some of those people might be bad people, nope. Do they try and make an allegory like old Trek and present both sides of the issue, nope ICE is bad and we’re right and there is no other side. Clearly this was written when Trump was still president.

That’s probably it, they mention finding life on Io, but what does Adam Soong have to do with it?

Based on how they were depicted in the episodes they had no reason to think ICE were good at all, so what so you think was unrealistic about how ICE was portrayed?

If you've been paying attention, I've been downright critical of the last two seasons of Discovery. My criticisms have focused primarily on the lacklustre writing and the direction the showrunners have taken the series.

On the other hand. your two main criticisms of "modern" Trek seem to boil down to two things:

    1. FUCKING WOKE POLITICALLY CORRECT BULLSHIT!!!1!

Which, of course, completely ignores the fact that original Trek (and even TNG to a lesser extent) were fairly progressive for their time.

    2. FUCKING STUPID CONTINUITY ERRORS!!!1!

Which, of course, completely ignores the fact that Trek continuity and "canon" are a hot mess.

The original series episode in which they travel back in time they speak of Nazis as bad, don't present another side. Just flat out Nazis are bad.

Should they have presented another side of Nazis?

The "continuity errors" aren't even errors half the time, they're just basic plot points that (most) sophisticated 21st century viewers shouldn't need explained to them by now. :async:

I was guessing something along the lines of a damaged ship or an injured alien that needs help and compassion. Maybe a crashed Borg cut off from the collective, or one of Guinan's people, or an injured Q. She helps it and sends it on its way, while her replacement would have captured it and brought it back to Earth to exploit.

I think we should ban @Federal Farmer from posting in all Trek related threads because it would be an incredibly interesting psychological experiment in observing how he would react to not being capable of complaining about Trek all the time

That would be dreadful. Dead characters should stay dead, and the coda for Data in Series One was very good.
