i thought you were being facetious... but I'm VERY turned off by the news they've cast Kirk. This better be a fake out.
I have not been this excited for a new Trek property since at least the premiere of The Undiscovered Country - nothing else even close. And it looks like it will surpass even my wildest expectations! And I really enjoy Picard and Disvovery, I'm not a hater, but ***THIS*** is my jam OFFICIAL TRAILER PROMO StarTrek Strange New Worlds Season 1 - 4K (UHD) - Teaser - Clip S01 - YouTube ETA: Mentally healthy Pike is WAY more appealing than tortured Pike
going by the ponn far shown in the trailer, we can presume this is set in 2260 (seven years prior to Amok Time). I've got a shiny toonie says that they're giving way too much thought to rebooting TOS by 2026.
Season Two (which they are now filming) I'm okay with it if he's just passing through for an episode or two and they respect the history (which I assume they will - you don't make this show without that intention) There are some good one-off ideas for how this could work - for example, say this is right after the attack on the Farragut (the timing works) and Kirk, despite his guilt complex, has been assigned temporary command to bring the ship home and for whatever plot-reason crosses paths with Enterprise. You could tell a helluva story about Pike - who's been down this road - trying to help Kirk to get past the self-recrimination and get his career back on track. Just for one example
My only real complaint about the Kirk thing is that Wesley is at least a decade too old to be playing Kirk at that point in his life. I know actors can and do "play young" but dude is 39 and if this is 2260 (at the latest) then Kirk should be about 27 - are their no good actors 25-30 in Hollywood? All the more so if they DO intend to do TOS 2.0 at some point, the time they invest in making each new season means he'll be WAY more miscast by the time they get to the back end of this decade.
One of the things I said, maybe the first thing, about them actually shooting this show would be that it would be really cool if the tease of the first episode had pike seeing Piper off as he left the shift and welcoming Boyce (and Boyce being played by Jeff Combs) Rather than lead with action, have a nice little relationship moment. But that's not happening in the way I imagine it. Still, I'm here for ANY fan-service that name-drops someone seen in "The Cage"
But then, I'm on record having cataloged a few items I'd love to see mined from TOS lore, like a Captain Matt Decker or the fall of Garth or some rational way for Gary Mitchell to pass through an episode (would be a big bonus if he appears in the Kirk arc). So yeah, I'm a sucker for well done fan service.
yeah, I could live with them finding Lt. Kirk on either the Farragut or Republic years. Maybe a buddy episode with his future crewmates.
I wonder if they'll use it to launch the Section 31 series? They could dovetail it so that it foreshadows the "Enterprise Incident" of TOS.
Spock and M'Benga get (canonical?!?!) first names! https://blog.trekcore.com/2022/04/star-trek-strange-new-worlds-mbenga-spock-first-names/
Eh, okay. I mean, I don't really give a shit about M'Benga, and it's at least canonical that Spock has a first name, so... But I hope they don't do like Seinfeld, where once Kramer's first name was revealed to be Cosmo, they called him that frequently. Spock, like Kramer, should go by the name we're familiar with. We have a 50 year history of Spock's closest friends and associates never using any other name; SNW shouldn't retcon that.
The new STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS Starfleet tricorder, communicator, and phaser props. TBH, I could very much have rolled with a retconned tricorder that was a bit more streamlined - the communicator and Phaser are perfect - BUT I am absolutely THRILLED about what this says about the intentions of the showrunners so I'll be fine with it.
technically the reporting seems to have it wrong. Spock's own family calls him "Spock" - clearly this is his given name. What they have added here is a family name of some sort, only in the other order as in Asian culture, or in-canon planets like Bajor.
Good point. A Mr. Smith wouldn't call his son Smith, so if Sarek calls his son Spock, Spock's got to be his, er, Christian name. I think you're right: the name (as it is shown on the poster) is formulated as in, say, Chinese. Wong Kar-wai and Chow Yun-fat have family names Wong and Chow, respectively, because in their tradition the family name is written first.
Basically. If you throw enough shit at the wall something will stick; this might just be the turd for me. Everything looks great, except ... has there been a radical change in the writers' department? Perhaps this will be Akiva Goldsman's jam. He goes near a word processor and the Golden Raspberry Awards go on yellow alert. Maybe he's had enough decades experience to pull off something competent and - dare I say it - entertaining. If this were more serialized twaddle I'd be less optimistic. I'm looking forward to it, but no more. I'm seeing a lot of people putting all their chips in on this one. This one will be a harder letdown if it isn't the course correction everyone's hoping for.
