True, but they ARE Security officers. There has to be a rotation. If you aren't watching Paris, you're making sure no-one is sneaking into the secondary computer core.

See Lower Decks for some of the shit assignments on a starship.

There's that door to a hallway on the left side.
One assumes that's where they gear up with phasers, tricorders, spacesuits if needed, etc, but I've also head-canon-ed there's an office for the chief to cozily sit in with a monitor to see if someone's about to come in, so he can run to the console, and pretend to have been there the whole time.

You could just program a proximity sensor and a site-to-site transport.

Better not be taking time out to self-pleasure or get jiggy with that Ensign from Astrophysics, though.

Although if the Ferengi can have their transporters strip Troi and Troi Sr... you could program a robing option.

Wouldn't help with the boner though.

    Ahah!! I knew it!!

Leonard Rosenman was the composer on both Star Trek 4, and the animated Lord Of The Rings.

The Star Trek 4 theme is an almost total ripoff of the LOTR one.
He barely even tinkered with any of the notes.

But he's gotta be right there for when the ship encounters another ship that's about to explode and the bridge needs him to beam the crew over before it goes kaboom.

But does he, from TNG on we've seen that prior can be transported by vernal commands. Just say "Computer, emergency transport all life forms from ship of the starboard bow.".

Theory: It actually only takes about 10 people to run the Enterprise, but Starfleet knows that 10 people on a starship for years at a time will go crazy, so they make up jobs for a thousand more.

It was mentioned by Janeway on-screen that Voyager required roughly 100 crew members to operate properly. I think it's the endless maintenance and repairs that make up most of that number, especially if the ship is facing combat or running into damaging anomalies or whatever.

Scotty was able to automate almost everything on the Enterprise in TSS so that just a handful of folks could run the ship.

How many people does it take to run a ship currently? like a cruise ship. That's probably the minimum number of people to run a starship. Then add new jobs - like diplomats and the like when interacting with other species.

Voyager only needed a crew of about 100. But, Enterprise D had over a thousand people on it. Subtracting family and passengers, probably at least 500 to run that ship.

I mean... kind of? Setting the autopilot for Genesis, sure. But a properly crewed Constitution class wouldn't normally find itself so quickly or easily disabled by a single Klingon bird of prey.

And an airplane flying from NY to Los Angeles doesn’t have to worry about anti-aircraft weapons, so it doesn’t require a shitload of people onboard to keep it running.

It’s been a few years since I’ve had enough liquor in me to stomach rewatching TSS, so I don’t know if Scotty knew there was a chance that they could run into the Klingons. As for encountering another Federation ship, I will remind you of why Scotty might not be worried about such a thing in the words of Khan, “Of course! We are one big happy fleet!”

There's a whole piece of dialogue in that very ep that shows that she couldn't and it isn't logical to believe she could.

Yes, if configured properly, you could fly the E-D from a single console. The computer could handle a lot of stuff on automatic.

But there's a reason Geordi needs a full engineering team. Level 4-5 diagnostics are automated, but the computer doesn't have auto-repair systems like a Borg Cube.

Hell, even the Borg have drones simply because automatics can't do everything.

The Okuda technical manual says you could theoretically fly the ship with just a PADD.
    But it's not advisable.

Like driving a car with your feet.
You could do it, but don't.

@Tuckerfan posted this in the random meme thread.

And I had a random thought. If he were to not hold them and aim them. But instead just let them go loose, would he end up whipping around like this?

    hmmm... why though?
Ortegas is a pilot, Reno is an engineer.

Why not? Though, given that modern pilots are given engineering training, it’s not unreasonable that Ortegas would have some engineering training.

I guess... just other than the irreverent sense of humour they share, not seeing much in common with the characters.

Yeah, who wants to see characters with the same sense of humor riffing off of one another? I mean, seeing Robin Williams with his idol, Jonathan Winters was just absolute shite.

On a more serious note, when we first saw Reno, I was screaming, "OMG! I want more of her! She's fucking awesome!" So, really, I don't give a shit what rando justification they come up with to put Tig Notaro in SNW, I'll fucking take it. Reno's the best engineer in Trek since Scotty. :bailey:

    ah, finally the honest answer.

which would breed the inevitable shitshow over honest representation as Navia ain't gay (at least not out and last listed partner was het, so...).

Discovery had been on several seasons and UA said I came to mind when he saw Reno. Then I watched the show and ... because I'm vain and superficial, I was a little taken aback that he thought of me as an old lady. Despite her character being about 10 years younger than I am.
