    Wakanda Forever trailer.
...although this technically counts as the last film of phase 4.

Pointy ears, green shorts, wing feet. Checks out to me.
I mean, I guess he could have his pointy eyebrows, but that's not a deal breaker for me.
The extra headdress and necklace stuff is a bit busy, but I can live with it.
Hulk had extra accessory stuff going on in Ragnarok that was temporary.
    No biggie.

Yeah, all the "Mayan" or "Aztec" stuff, which has nothing to do with Atlantis, the mustache and Zappa beard . . . ugh. Looks like another case of "we can do it better than the comics" and being just as wrong as ever.

As much as I appreciate the classic simple Namor look, in 2022 it's a bit, well...

I think they had to change it.

Otherwise it would seem to casual audiences like they were copying DC’s Aquaman. Even though Namor was introduced first in the comics.

Or audiences might even wonder why DC was crossing over with Marvel.

Besides I don’t think Namor has a huge fanbase anyway. I think most people won’t care about the changes.

That ship sailed when they made Nick Fury black. People got used to that change. People will eventually get used to this.

They did have to change it, but for the most part they didn't. They kept the silly swimtrunks, they just made him jangly. And, of course, made him POC.

There have been a lot of Namor costumes over the years. They could easily have done something like this.

I doubt this is one I'll be seeing in the theater. Chadwick Boseman was fantastic as T'Challa, I think it's going to be really hard to replace him.

If I hear good things I might revisit it.

Honestly I'm more interested in Black Adam.

The easiest way to have T'Challa out of the picture is to set it during the blip.
    Easy-peasy.
But...that fucks with the timeline for Ironheart, so they can't take that easy way out.
So I have no fuggin' idea what they're going to do.

Dude looks like Mr. Spock and/or an Elf and he lives in an ancient kingdom under the sea, it'd be weirder if he was portrayed as generic white. Not to mention the optics of an imaginary kingdom of generic white people attacking an imaginary kingdom of black people.

Fun fact: A lot of older stuff depicts Namor as more or less Asian.

Why would this even be an issue? Shouldn't the best actor get the job. Don't ever recall hearing "the person in the book, was blonde, but the actor has dark hair!!!"

Also, the story Hope Springs Eternal: Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, the character, Red was white - Irish to be specific, but I don't think anyone would argue that Morgan Freeman wasn't the absolutely best actor for that part in a movie.

Nah, Namor has always been the son of a white sea captain and an Atlantean princess. He may have looked like he had Asian features, but he certainly wasn't supposed to be Asian.

As to the Sea Elf version, yeah, I would prefer that. Your 'generic' white concept is a bit strange. The Atlantis myth comes straight to us from Plato, most likely as a retelling of the Thera eruption in Minos or the tsunami that destroyed Helike. The original interpretation of Atlantis was one dominated by descendants of Greeks and the Gods, who worshipped the same Hellenic pantheon. Yes, they would be white. Hellenic Greece dominated the Mediterranean for a thousand years, including Asia Minor/Turkey.

Clearly they took some of these myths as the basis for the original Atlantis and Namor. Hell, his 'mutation' (another retcon) was winged ankles, similar to Hermes, that granted him flight. And the Trident is a symbol of Poseidon, another direct Greek reference.

Later interpretations were that it was Aztec or Mayans. But that wasn't for literally 2000 years after the story was first told. :D

But again, his costume was kept as is, scaley swim trunks. With Mayan jewelry accessories, so you know he's Mesoamerican. You are entitled to your opinion on that, mine is 'Meh.

I am looking forward to seeing Namor in the broader context of the MCU, especially as we begin to see the implementation of so many the characters associated with his back story - the FF, Doom, Magneto, even to a less extent Professor X.

I just hope the writing is up to snuff. The last couple of Marvel projects have been fair to below average on that score IMO.

It isn't a major issue - almost all of my comments on that were around his crappy costume until multiple posters brought up that passing comment. You guys sure want it to be an issue. LOL.

If someone said 'Red should be a white guy in Maine, that's how he was written and the number of black guys in Maine in the 40s was very, very low' I'd have had no problem with it. All that is true.

I'd also still have enjoyed Morgan Freeman's performance. And yes, I think it is possible other actors could have done a good job with that part, but Freeman was excellent in the role.

I imagine T'Challa dies doing something super heroic in the beginning of the film, but he's masked up as Black Panther the whole time and they just use his voice (I think they said they weren't going to use facial technology to recreate his face, rightfully so)?

I don't know if I can like Black Panther without Boseman. It's too sad. He owned that fucking role like he was born to play it.
