I have seen a little bit of pushback on that. People basically saying you could have supported a crap ton of former players with that payout.
American "amateur" college sports are essentially free farm leagues for the professional leagues. Time to shut them all the fuck down. Seriously. (But it ain't going to happen.)
But for real. How is this legal? Boards of American corporations have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders. Do these regents not have the same to citizens? How do you justify paying someone an extra $13 MILLION dollars by firing them five days early? To answer my own question it is so the next coach will feel safe to join a struggling program but in terms of public employees this is all fucking crazy talk!!!
Proper allocation of tax dollars: Shoutout to New Hampshire for defying stereotypes and being the only state where a Hockey Coach is the highest paid employee. Non-sarcastic shoutout to Connecticut for having a women’s team coach being the highest earner. Gonna bet the coach is still a man though… :/
At a salary in the $4 million range, I don't really give a fuck if they "feel safe" joining the program. At that level, you can take two years' salary after taxes, stick it in an investment account, and live comfortably off of the interest for life. It's not like the next coach is taking on a lot of personal risk.
In CT it is certainly the UCONN Huskies. I used to date someone who went there, and the girlfriend of one of my HS friends was her roommate. The men's basketball team at UCONN was one of my first views of how college sports guys get to rape girls and get away with it. Oh, nostalgia. One of the first times I went to a a college boy with a bat and threatened to Nancy his knees. (Think women's figure skating). Unfortunately the girl had to leave college after that, but I did help her get back on her feet. Of course, that was the men's team back in the 90's. UCONN's basketball is the source of all sorts of campus fighting and problems. I am sure the women's team has their problems too.
If I got fired and was paid 8 million, it would be the worst day ever. 21 million would also be terrible.
