Dayton sent a PM to garamet asking the admins to let him have access to his diary in the Blue Room. I'm pretty certain he got access not long ago, and I know I made him a zip file of his diary thread and it was sent to him. I'm not sure what he really wants here.
He shouldn’t get shit. One of the reasons he’s the way he is is because he’s never really had to endure any consequences for his actions. He shouldn’t even have the ability to PM anyone here. It’s past time he grew up.
Yeah but it's not our job to try and fix Dayton, and his diary thread is obviously something he will keep trying to get access to. I say stick it in a private room and give him an account with access only to that room, letting him know that after a week the account will be locked and thread deleted.
Yeah, but from a pragmatic sense it seems best to go with an option then ends up with less long term hassle for the admins here. A diary is an intensely personal and important thing to people. Dayton shouldn't have been relying on WF as storage for it, but as long as it is we can expect Dayton to keep wanting access to it. Now that said, if he has a zipped version of it I'm not quite sure what his problem is.
It's Dayton we're talking about. An IP ban will solve the problem. (We could probably just do one for his entire state, since I doubt if anyone else from there would try to join up.) That's his problem, not ours. It's not our job to ensure that he always has access to it. He's not getting the attention he craves. He'd been reposting bits of it to another site according to @shootER. What happened with that? Did they ban him? Or is he just not getting the kind of validation there that he got here?
I check over there every few weeks to see if he's made any more noise about getting help to hack the board. He hasn't pasted any posts from his BR diary thread there since shortly after he was banned from here. Otherwise, he appears to be about as active there as he was here. If he's got a zip file of his thread (this is the first I recall hearing about that, BTW ) then I think WF has done about as much as could be expected for a banned member such as him. Beyond that, the easiest way to keep him from trying to continuously access the thread would be to delete it.
Yeah, don’t. I won’t throw a fit if anyone does but we shouldn’t keep coddling him. Additionally, he has a history of lying about his tech abilities. If you’ll recall, he said in the past that he was deliberately fucking up the quote tags just to piss people off. How do we know he’s telling the truth about not having gotten the zip file? What’s to stop him from bugging people, claiming he can’t figure out how to open it?
I'm inclined to agree. He got a copy sent to him once (which I don't recall being discussed) which should be enough.
All it really consisted of was my scraping his posts and responses in the diary thread and sending them in a zipped text (or html? can't recall) file. I can try to do that again if you think it's worth the effort.
I went ahead and scraped it. Oh, turns out there's a side effect that it went through and randomly facepalmed a shitload of people as it scraped, so sorry if you were one of them. Anyhoo, here's the file if anyone wants to give it to Dayton:
Yep. This time there's an actual record of him getting it, and it's in an easy to read format. Let him have it, and ignore any future requests.
Well, hell. I did have the full thread archived. Not sure what happened. Honestly, it's too much trouble trying to do that for him anyway.
This. During his last long ban he was allowed Blue Room access as a kindness and he came back and continued to shit up the board. He was given a zip file months ago. If he can't find it or can't figure out how to open it, that's his problem. I'm sorely tempted to just delete the thread and be done with it.
That's the only reason I haven't nuked it. Though we could delete all posts but one and replace it with this image and people would still get Dayton's life story.
Okay, how about this? If you think it's silly, okay, but it's at least worth a shot: if Dayton really wants his diary posts, I can give him read only access to the Blue Room so he can copy and paste his posts. He can get, oh, maybe a week to do that, and then I can remove his access. I know it seems a lot to do since he's banned, but if it gets him his diary, then there's no other reason for him to keep requesting access. That's entirely up to you guys, though.
Nope. Because he'll make up some excuse about having lost the file and needing it again. Or something. In reality, he's probably not at all interested in his thread. This just yet another attempt at him to bend the rules. You give him access now, and he'll want something more later. It's what he does. He's banned, with no possibility of return, and that should be the end of it. If he doesn't have the thread, that's his problem, not ours.
This. He's been given ample opportunity over the years (including being given access to the Blue Room while he was sitting out a temporary ban--something that no other member has ever been allowed) so there's no sympathy for him here. He's banned and should've planned better for saving the content of the thread he posted on this board.
Well, like I said, it's completely up to you. I just wanted to toss it out there since it crossed my mind!
I'm late to the party here, but fuck Dayton. The zip file was more than any of the other ten million boards he's been banned from have ever given him and he only pulls that shit here because we have him chance after chance. I rarely agreed with Chup, but he was right on the money about allowing him access to his diary. That said, I'm not fond of deleting the post, either. Obviously, reopening will invite wank and drama, but it's one of the very few pre-2007 posts we have and there's a whooooooole lotta lulz left from other posters in it. Dayton can get Volpone or his lover Poodle Boy to copy it for him. We treat him like we do Castle or any other insistent troll.
Technically Baba owns the copyright to Dayton's diary thread. After Dayton was banned, I did give him a zip file of his diary thread, but it was mostly scanned copies of old Star Log magazines.
