http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4460596...released-iran-prison-after-million-bail-paid/ So now that they're out and we're all happy, were they just incredibly stupid to go near the border, or were they actually spies?
I'm guessing they were incredibly stupid/naive. They should be extremely happy that they weren't executed or castrated during their stay. I'm not sure I'd even blame the Iranian government if they decided to jail them indefinitely. Who the hell goes sightseeing along the Iraq-Iran border??
Incredibly stupid. BTW what's the "over-under" on how long before they hike thru Bosnia's Posavina Corridor? I was there. Lots of one legged soccer players if you get my drift.
As soon as they show up on US soil they should be charged, put and jail, and billed for the crap they pulled.
They were dumb ass hippies who were destined to either end up shot, kidnapped, or imprisoned because they're so fucking stupid. "I know! Let's go hiking in a war zone!"
What a bunch of yellow fruitcakes are inhabiting this thread. If I were in charge incidents like these hikers and Iran woud be dealt with using the Palmerston Doctrine. Civis Romanus Sum, you backwards motherfuckers.
Oh, I just remembered - they are young college types. Maybe the whole thing was an "ironic" hiking trip.
Nautica disagrees: you assume wrong Well coming from Midnight Funeral, plus not being able to find the Palmerston Doctrine, and then Funeral's Roman saying..... http://www.leftbusinessobserver.com/HowToDefault.html <-- finally found the Doctrine
Actually that's not the doctrine I meant. I was describing his interventionist approach to Subjects of the Crown in bad situations in far flung places, in which he cited Civis romanus sum as justification for sending the Royal Navy to blockade Greece for the sake of one man. A better summation might be in this quotation from The West Wing:
You don't have to be a fascist to find the idea of peace through strength -- the idea of ensuring your citizens will be safe because swift vengeance will fall upon anyone who hurts one of them -- appealing. But there are problems with that doctrine, and they were articulated pretty well in the episode quoted above. In other words, the problem with bringing the full might of the United States to bear on anyone who harms an American citizen in any way -- as good as it sounds on paper -- is that once you do that, there's nowhere left to go.
These were naive mushy-headed college students who probably believe the problems of the world stem from a lack of understanding. They got a hard lesson in reality, methinks.
Given your own penchant for "bomb the shit out of them" rhetoric, it was difficult to tell that in this instance you were being sarcastic.
of my bomb the shit out of them rhetoric would be nice but I think we know you're not up to the task..... Every time this topic has come up I've been talking about the stupidity of the hikers. Not once have I said we should bomb Iran over these hikers. I've no sympathy for idiots who go to dangerous parts of the world and get themselves in trouble. Some LOLCats would like to speak to you......
Garamet, Zombie isn't calling for a "bomb the shit out of them" campaign, but rather pointing out MF is a jackass for endorsing such a doctrine. At least that's my understanding.
