How far off are you from the Air Force weight standard?

Obviously those parameters are for men. Are there comparable ones for women?

It says I am currently too fat to fly since I am 71 inches tall but over 200lbs.

Although I can still become one of those middle aged drunkard airline pilots, right?

Both my body weight and the amounts I routinely bench press are over the ideal for my height in that chart. It looks like they want you to be pretty bony. Maybe keep the burden on your circulatory system to a minimum if you're a pilot, keep your proportions within a very narrow standard for harnesses and seating and whatnot for everyone, I guess.

Well, Navy standards are far more relaxed than the other branches, and I'm well over those...

If one is over the body weight, they'll do a taping to determine the body fat. There are a few muscular dudes who always go over, but will tape in at somewhere around 18 to 20 percent (the acceptable limit for the Navy is 22).

Now that you bring it up, I lived in an Air Force town growing up, but I don't remember seeing any that were super bulky like I see on a semi-regular basis in the Navy. :mystery:

Maybe the Navy thinks that fat people make goood flotation devices?

    I'm 20 pounds under weight.

Alcohol hinders weight loss, by the way. Just throwing that out there for no reason. :bailey:

Ummm.. are you all seeing a different chart than I am? Because nowhere does it say these are pilot weight requirements, just AF requirements. Not everyone in the AF is a pilot.

Also, are these weights just to join, or weights for those already in the AF? What about age factors?

Anyway, I'm ten pounds under the max according to this chart.

My understanding is that Tom Cruise was actually about the right height in Top Gun and it was even worse back in Vietnam. I, vaguely, remember reading that if you were even a millimeter over 5'-9", you'd lose your legs from the knees down if you had to eject from a F-4.

Around 25 pounds under the limit.

Woops sorry, miscalculated. Make it 45.

Just to make you all hate me even more, earlier tonight I had a big bowl of whole grain spaghetti with meat sauce. :)

Then a couple hours later I ate a mini pizza.

And I'm halfway through a bottle of Australian cabernet.

None of that is out of the ordinary, yet I never gain weight. :clyde:

To my great surprise (I'm an old fattie...), it turns out that by Air Force standards I am not overweight.

I am, however, about 2" too short... :bergman:

40 pounds under. But it says maximum weight, it doesn't say what the ideal weight should be.

Except that weight distribution for women and men *isn't* equal.

Anyway, this puts me 40 pounds under the desired weight for my height, so I'm cool with it.

It's silly that they don't have separate charts for men and women. It ignores basic physiological differences. You really don't want a 5'9" 128# guy much more than you want a 5'9" 186# girl. But I guess when you're in a branch where the vast majority of the killin' is done by bombs and missiles from increasingly rear areas, the brain is more important than the body.

Oh, and I've got 20-30#, depending on if I've feeling tall and or eating bacon and Oreo Doublestuffs.

Okay, I researched it. If you don't meet the weight standards because you are very muscular (happens a lot in The Army) you can be measured for body fat percentage. Otherwise you would end up with all thin but weak people.
Towards the end of my career I was often over 191 at 70 inches (too heavy for AF standards) but had a high enough muscle to fat ratio so I was okay in The Army.

BTW I know a lot of "overweight" folks who could blow the PT scores right out of the water. If course that means nothing...your ass will still get kicked out if you are too fat no matter how athletic you are. The Army has discharged people with a maximimum score on their PT test, because weight and fitness are two different things entirely.
Counterintuitive and ironic? You make the call!
