This Saturday I'm gonna go buy one of these:

So I need a name for it. I'm hoping to get a male turtle, since they're smaller than the females (so they need a smaller habitat).

Now, these lil fuckers live for 75 years or so. I need a name that I can all this pet for the rest of my life.

Pokemon names and TMNT names not accepted. :TKO:

Upon further review, the turtle in Milo and Otis seems to have been nameless. Therefore I have no contributions at this time.

I like Sheldon. It's a good turtle name, AND a good TV character. Hmm... you're the second person to suggest it so far.

Tank, or Tank the Turtle, maybe even Squishy?

Were they caught, or raised in captivity and how old is the turtle? Only asking because turtles don't wander far from their homes, and when removed from their home area can spend the rest of their lives looking for their home. Plus over 1/2 of box turtles that are taken from the wild die before being sold.

Box turtles also require very specific diets and environments if they are to live for years in captivity.

What variety of turtle is that? Kinda looks like a tortoise. Anyway, we have a turtle, a [GOOGLE]red-eared slider[/GOOGLE] named Yurtle (Yes I know the Dr. Seuss turtle is named Yertle) and he is a high maintenance pet. You're going to need a deep aquarium with a safe basking area, and another tank for feeding. Turtles need outside time too, real sunshine, real flora, real exercise but you have to keep a close eye on them, they're natural escape artists. Plus they're darn near silent, often remain motionless for hours, and are naturally camouflaged. The greater problem is that an escaped turtle is a turtle destined to die slowly.

As for bonding? Yurtle recognizes me, he swims over whenever I'm nearby, he's calm when handled, and often sticks his head out for petting. But for the most part he is completely indifferent to human attention. At best it seems he simply associates us with food/warmth.

In other words, I recommend not getting a pet turtle. They don't want to be part of your family, they won't show you affection, or respond to your commands. Providing a healthy habitat for turtles is fine but they're not pets, and they'd prefer to be left alone.

That said I'd go with Dudley. :D

Well, since I'm gone for large parts of the day either working in lab, teaching, or studying, and then get home to more work, I need a pet that just sits there most of the time. I do have time to check on it every day, feed it, check the habitat, etc. so that shouldn't be an issue. I just felt lonely and didn't want to get a cat or dog because they do require more attention. My parents' cat is an attention whore and I've never seen a dog that was content to sit in an empty apartment for 12 hours without fucking things up.
