Pardon my interruption of the shit slinging, but something that stood out for me: no one claiming responsibility is in some ways a bit more disconcerting.

Most of the time you'll have some group brandishing how they were behind it. This time, the culprit(s) are laying low.

On the one hand, it could mean this is likely not linked to a terror network, as it doesn't fit that type of expect behavior. Or, it could be a new take by those same agents of terror.

There is something a bit more anxiety-inducing about it being unattributed and the motive therefore unexplained. It also leads one to wonder if/suspect that the Boston event may be the first in a chain of events that will only be taken credit for later.

Turns out some patients did go to my sister's hospital, although it's a bit further from the blast site than a few others. No real details on that, but she confirmed something I had been thinking about. We are extremely lucky that the death toll wasn't much higher.

    1) There were dozens of doctors on scene, volunteering to assist post-race runners. They ran an immediate triage and first level emergency care. People injured saw a doctor within minutes.

    2) There are six level 1 trauma centers less than three miles from the blast location, and they were each about to make shift changes. Nobody left, effectively doubling the number of emergency care experts.

    3) Ambulances were pre-positioned. The most critical patients began arriving at hospitals within 10 minutes of the first explosion.

In spite of all this, there were probably about a dozen people who arrived at emergency rooms only minutes away from death. This could have been significantly worse. We are incredibly lucky in that regard.

The pre-positioned ambulances were a real asset and probably something that didn't cross the mind(s) of the sick bastard(s) who planned this attack.

Those EMTs were probably anticipating a pretty ho-hum day, maybe treating a few people in distress from the long run. What happened instead will likely be the most intense day of their careers.

Yeah, it's a bit disconcerting. Though keep in mind, no one knew who was behind 9/11 until after a few months when we were able to trace the hijackers to Al Qaeda. And even then, Al Qaeda did not claim responsibility and OBL was denying it all, up until 2004 when he finally claimed responsibility.

True. Or this was a lone wolf who got caught up in the explosion and was planning on making his announcement later. Right now we're all just pissing in the wind.

As a side note: Don't know if in the past 11 pages if this has been covered, but in my other job, we have been reviewing this. A few lessons for citizens. #1 never run towards a bomb blast. Find safety and wait a bit to see if there are gonna be any secondary explosions which are set off to kill people giving aid. #2 Tourniquets: Anc know this, but for the rest of you..for arterial extremity bleeds don't putz around with direct pressure if you can put a tourniquet on. "If you put a tourniquet on the victim will lose their limb" and "you have to relieve the pressure from a tourniquet every few minutes" are old wives tales. Iraq and Afghanistan have proved this. When it comes to tourniquets, dont even bother with a belt. You can fashion one out of a torn shirt, debris for a windlass (stick) and a key ring. Just make sure it's at least 1" wide.

We know this anyway, as all terrorists are full of fail, but the significantly lower than expected death toll, combined with next year's marathon likely being the biggest ever, means they are full of super fail.

I just think it is one dumb ass idiot. We had a lot of those in North Bend. One person is capable of quite a lot.

Did we discuss here the guy on the roof yet? He could have just been a normal marathon spectator. Someone had captured this in a picture.

Somebody somewhere mentioned that particular rooftop is a cafe, so it's not unusual someone would be up there.

It's probably not related but 3 ricin laced letters have been intercepted, addressed to the President as well as a Senator.

They're either too stupid to know that a politician never opens his or her mail or trying to send a message.

Given that it happened at roughly the same time I say they are related.

I agree the timing is too much for coincidence because the letters were sent before the bombs went off. That's no "me too" action, it's related.

I don't really think they're related, except for the person mailing these ricin letters is taking advantage of the fear following the bombing. It's just as likely to be coincidental timing--these mailings have happened before at various times when attacks have not happened. I doubt they're being carried out by the same person or persons who carried out the bombing. Keep in mind the anthrax mailings started up soon after 9/11 and those were completely unrelated.

    Breaking news.....

They've got a suspect they are looking for. Store camera footage tipped them off.

They say he's dark skinned. The asshole at Salon that wished it was a white person doing the bombing is sure to be disappointed.

An arrest is about to be made or has already been made. Lord & Taylor security cameras is what led to this breakthrough.

Good. We'll all see a picture soon enough, so that we can take a position on him, each according to our own idealogical stances. :bailey:

No, this is more Bajoran style. Cardassian style has more nuance and is much more grand in scheme.

One of the hijackers had traces of anthrax on him. There's never really been any conclusive evidence as to who was responsible for the letters.

Let's hope this is the guy.

Even if it's just a bagman (a cutout hired to deposit the bags) its a step closer.
