This Daniels guy must be pushing to be the new Oliver Stone. And I was so looking forward to seeing this movie.

None of that indulgent dramatization surprises me in the least.

And I liked The Doors and Natural Born Killers.

The movie is an historical fiction inspired by the real-life account of Eugene Allen.

Where did you read that it was a 'true story'?

You might have had a point if the movie was about a real person.

Maybe he doesn't want to see Forrest Gump 2: Bubba's story.

I just need to pay special attention whenever the words "True Story" are being used. "Inspired by" is basically code words for "we read about a true story and decided to shit on it to fit our agenda."

How come there aren't any good filmmakers?

They should just stop making movies.

So, why didn't they present the actual story instead of presenting a body of lies?

    Body of lies??

Are you saying that the historical events in the movie are lies? That's those weren't the real presidents of the time?

Do you understand what 'historical fiction' means?

    Talk about splitting hairs......

Yes it's a work of "historical" fiction but it's backers and stars all implied it was based on a true story.

Most people, meaning not Wordforge (or internet junkies), will of course naturally assume that it's based on a real story. Too many people hear the words "historical fiction" and automatically assume that's the way it happened.

If there was a big ass 30 second long sign at the beginning of the movie that said "This movie is historical only in the sense that there are past Presidents in it. All else is bullshit" then it wouldn't be a problem.

If we go with you're line of thinking then the story in Titanic is valid because it too had things in that really happened. Like the ship sinking, Thomas Andrews being seen last first class smoking room staring at a painting and so on.....

The movie Titanic was an historical fiction. A rather good depiction of what might have happened.

I don't know about you but I know what historical fiction represents. You might not be aware but the book "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" is an historical fiction. The BOOK.

    Also Gone With The Wind.

But there are too many to name.

It's one thing if you invent some humdrum nobody so you can tell a story while portraying what a past society was like.

It's another thing when you selectively portray the life of an actual person. I'm not fond of condensing someone's life into ninety minutes played by someone with a different face, voice, mannerisms, etc. and dolling it all up to meet Hollywood's current perception of "marketable", but some people learn best through audiovisual media or whatever.

It's another thing when you say "This person didn't lead the life I want to tell about, so I'm going to invent someone that everyone understands is supposed to be him and declare his life went like this."

If you don't feel any qualms about distorting someone's life to meet your own expectations, then you may have a future as a spin doctor or -- dare I say it -- a revisionist historian.

I guess there are plenty of movies you don't like.

And no one declared his life went like that. You mugs are really trying to make something out of nothing. You make it seem like this is THE first time a story was presented in this fashion.

    Yes.

Both are great movies but so much in them is wrong that they don't come close to what actually happened in real life.

I trust no movie to get anything about history right.

He was based however on a real person and that real persons life is nothing like portrayed in the movie.

Saying it's okay because we changed his name is an insult to the actual man.

At the very least leave the actual man out of it. Don't even bring him up.

The movie is being presented as if it's based on real events. But apparently the movie gets nothing right other then who the Presidents were.

Hell IMHO they changed the name of the main character to avoid any defamation lawsuits.

Clearly you did not read those books.

Don't come close to what really happened???? Yes, there is fiction within both movies but they DO come very close to what actually happened.

maybe you are thinking of Donnie Brasco.

How can you sit there and say that real persons life is nothing like portrayed in the movie? Nothing?? :jayzus:

You should be aware that writers and movie makers get there ideas from all over the place. many characters are based on real life people.

many stories are derived from real events. You guys can't be that simpleminded.

Up until recently, I thought it was a true story. That's the way they seem to be promoting it. It's like a true story but it's not a true story.
