A few Trek alumni are trying to create a pilot to sell to CBS.

The story potentially has legs, but for some reason I can't help but detect a whiff of Andromeda for some reason.

They've reached the base amount, so it looks like we'll get something, and I may chip in for the hell of it.

I'm not liking wheeling out poor old Chekov, who ten years after VOY must be like a gazillion years old and Koenig is looking increasingly like he could start chucking force lighting around another franchise at any given moment, but props to those giving their time for this.

I like the idea of presenting a fully-fledged episode though, makes for a better sell than a script for visualising the end product.

My crowdsourced, crowdfunded kickstarter project just went viral.

The entire goal of the project is to fund the means by which people who use the terms "crowdfunded," "crowdsourced," or "went viral" are summarily fucking executed.

True. At least it's tangible & the media/entertainment equivalent of a product sample you get in the mail &/or in supermarkets & like stores.

    Probably not.

Probably not, but it's nice to see it being tried, and a reasonable amount of funding may make CBS sit up and consider using fans to subsidise productions and fire it through the likes of Netflix.

Partially fan-funded mini-series could be a nice income stream with reduced cost risks, at some point the bean counters are going take a look.

It's being made by the same people who did Of Gods and Men, and that stank.

Oh my god they are making another fan fiction 'film'.

Those monetary amounts can't be right. On a real production you'll maybe get the catering buffet for 200.000 dollars. Studios don't put in that kind of money for fun. Indies might be able to cut some corners but not too many before quality starts lacking severly. I mean, a decent movie camera alone (not a DSLR even though those catch up quick) runs around 2000 dollars... per day. Sound, lights, about the same. And then you don't have a single nail in a semi-convincing set or the wireframe for a semi-convincing CGI set.

But just go for it. I like when people take matters into their own hands. Just remember, even IRON SKY which was basically made in Timo Vuorensola's living room had a seven-figure budget and still looks like shit. But it had a great idea and was lots of fun nevertheless. Something I just can't see in what little the Renegades give away from their plot.

Why don't you try and crowdfund DKTrek?

You say it'd be popular, so starting something up on Kickstarter or Indiegogo may be an idea?

I don't get why the Renegade bunch are going for physical sets when green screened CGI would be better. It's a pilot to sell a series, they don't need to effects to be great - just look at how Lucas spliced war movie footage into his early versions of ANH to sell it.

God no. A low-budget green screen will get us something like that last ass-raping of Babylon 5's corpse. Lost Tales of Bruce Boxlietner Gotta Eat, or somesuch.

"Star Trek: Renegades" sounds more like a video game than a TV series.

    Yup, that was an abortion.

But I have to admit, the production values on the fan series Star Trek Continues are astounding and on par with, or even better than, anything CBS ever did. They just need decent actors and stories.

Yeah, I saw a bit of that and felt that as well. Unfortunately, like you say, the acting is woeful. The casting is largely bad as well (Nemecek as McCoy was laughable). But I do think that one day someone will manage to do something largely as good as, at the very least, some of the Berman Treks.

Alas, the cast and premise for this doesn't look much more than poor knock off of the DS9 & Voyager years with the franchise's weaker actors.

Do you think it is necessarily the acting or the direction?

I've heard a big problem on fan productions is they simply do not have a director who can get decent performances out of the cast (on a larger scale, Harrisson Ford and Alec Guiness insisted that about George Lucas as a director).

Apparently, competent direction is more important in science fiction on television than it is for things like police procedurals.

Item: There's still the Star Trek: Worf floating around too.

Item: No one is likely to make something like this work BUT, the day will come, in our natural lifetimes, when CGI will progress to photo-realistic level and it will be possible to make more TOS stories (or DS9 or whatever) without employing ANY actors at all.

Item: They still don't have an answer to male-pattern baldness in the 24th century?

Still need people who can animate so it's believable. They are not much cheaper than B-list actors. Photorealistic CGI is no problem even these days, given money and talent. It's still motion captured (like Gollum) so you'll need actors and CGI artists.

It looks like half the crew of Voyager is trying to create themselves a job. :soma:

Still, there are some real cuties in that cast list! Chasty Ballesteros looks real good. I would wife and  tenderly.

For something not produced by CBS/Paramount it doesn't look half bad. I'm not overly excited about the dirty dozen or whatever plotline though.

Which begs the question, at what point do these stop being called fan films? There needs to be a third category for these semi pro-films. They have lots of real actors and access to tech that fan films just don't have.
