In all fairness, the NSA and CIA should be spying on foreign governments. It's their mission. Spying on us is the current issue.

The US is also bound by international treaties, including the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations, which does not allow spying on diplomatic correspondance. Do you think that what is to be gained by spying outweighs the potential loss of political trust in the US?

World War III begins when Snowden reveals that Vladimir Putin has gay feelings for Justin Bieber.

See, this I'm actually OK with. We're SUPPOSED to be spying on other countries.

    Naive.

You can bet other countries are doing the same thing to the extent of their capabilities.

No one is surprised by this, I assure you.

You can bet your ass on that. The government has toys and they like to play with them.

Not to such an extent. There are (mostly unspoken) rules about what's OK among allies and what isn't. The western world usually plays by those rules. It's not like the EU is secretly building up a terrorist army to capture midwestern Walmarts or something. That's the difference: the more and more paranoid US does seem to think along those ways. Other nations aren't so paranoid; they spy, but they don't assume everybody else is a permanent mortal danger to themselves.

I'm more shocked by the incompetence on display. I mean, now they are sweeping?!

Why is it naive to want nations to stick to the agreements that they make between each other?

Sufficient pressure will change it, as it is capable of changing every other instance of a government flagrantly violating the law.

Reveals like this mean you get a lot more support for people like Manning, Snowden, and Assange.

The US starts complaining "wah, they violated our governments privacy, it's an outrage anyone could do that"

The naivety is not in wanting it, but in believing it is common practice. I want all wars to end, too...

Or maybe it will only be capable of causing governments to be more careful next time and cover their tracks better. That's where my money is, anyway.

The only such agreement there's EVER been is that the only "sacred" communication means is the diplomatic bag.

Did anyone indicate that they didn't believe it was common practice?
It still should stop and we shouldn't get all passive and resigned about it.
