We did, until the late 60's - previous laws were pretty much based on the fear of the working class having access to such weaponry (make of that what you will.) IIRC, we still have a Right to Bear Arms - however, unlike the US, it has the modifier of "according to law." It was the introduction of gang "gun culture" in the 70's, Hungerford and Dunblaine that saw strict gun laws being introduced, as previously they'd simply not been an issue beyond use in crimes. So it wasn't gun availability that was the issue, it was the glamorisation of guns and cultural changes.
Known to whom? The police, of course. Whoever is arrested for this crime will have a rap sheet a mile long, including previous arrests for illegal possession of a firearm. Bet on it. Wouldn't you have to be a psycho to shoot into a crowd of strangers? No, just convinced it was something you had to do. Whoever shot these people doesn't hear voices, doesn't suffer hallucinations, and if he seems paranoid it's because people really are out to get him. It's a gang problem, not a gun problem.

Of Americans murdered in a given year, the total number killed by high profile spree killers is a very small percentage of the total.
So is the number of people killed by planes that terrorists fly into skyscrapers, btw. Percentage is not always the only consideration.
Which is why it's entirely inappropriate to classify a gang shooting as a spree shooting of the other variety.
Using today's criteria, Albert Kachellek, Peter Gusenberg, Frank Gusenberg, Adam Heyer, Reinhardt Schwimmer, Albert Weinshank, and John May where simply the victims of a random mass shooting. Chicago PD can go ahead and wrap that one up!
I think most people here are against many of the anti-terrorism overreactions the government has taken in response to 9/11. Gunforge isn't exactly a hotbed of support for the Patriot Act, the TSA, the DHS, the NDAA, etc.

I agree with him to a point - if you're a violent criminal/felon and you get caught with a gun in your possession during any future crimes while on parole, you get shot point blank with that same gun, and left in the street to rot/feed the critters. It's only fair! If they weren't carrying the gun you wouldn't have been able to take it from them and shoot them with it. It's like in the military, bitching about the commander kicking over your trash can during an inspection. If it was empty, there wouldn't be anything to clean up, right? So why bitch about him kicking over an empty trash can? Oh, there was trash in it.......dumbass!

Anyway, the last sentance was partly right - yes, we do need stricter punishments for felons using guns, but no - we dont need to keep guns out of our communities, because the "community" didn't shoot up the park. Certain elements of your community did, and will continue to do so with impunity because they will be back out doing it again in a few years/months. That and dead-ender females keep coupling with felons and making baby felons to continue the cycle. BTW six months of "bootcamp" really did the trick! Well, we tried. So now let's do it my way and he leaves the court-room in a bodybag. Or, hang all the shooters bodies in the park from a basketball hoop.
