Even after his views changed, his posts were still reasonable and "logical" to me, even when I personally disagreed with them. It's almost like the Sandy Hook incident pushed him over the edge.
There are two issues here: Demi's political shift and history of bizzare mood swings. It's unclear how or even if the two are related. The political shift occurred sometime in 2009, after Obama took office. He strongly supported John McCain right up through the election. It always seemed to me Demi was just a status-quo-supporting kind of guy, so whoever the president is, that's whose side he's on. For the other thing, I'm not sure if Sandy Hook did push him over the edge, as he's been prone to this kind of thing before. Anyone remember when he left the board after demanding in a Help Desk thread that El Chup be removed as moderator? Or claimed that Liet was trolling his son by using a Ghostbusters av? I can think of a few other flip-outs over the years. He usually demands a certain moderator action be taken, then leaves for a while when he doesn't get his way.
Gotta say "Demi's meltdown", sounds like a Scottish novel about the collapse of a coal mining town, and I think of it that way every time I see the thread title bumped.
"Aye, lad, I remember th' Demi malt-dohn of thayr-teen. A grrrreat yooooj bahstert, th' Demi was. Dark as th' pits of 'ay-deez 'n' smelt li'e yer muther's banana-hammock, an' when that big bahstert c'lapsed, all o' Galway stoonk ferra moonth!"
I seem to remember him not returning to post again until El Chup was dropped, too. He had a LiveJournal for a while, then one day he announced he was deleting it, didn't see any more use for it, and . . . he deleted it. I'm not saying he's gone for good, but it wouldn't surprise me if he were. He seems to be pretty good at making clean breaks.
Well, the post that starts with that nonsense. Unless he was calling Demi the tool of the week. In which case, cheerfully withdrawn.
Yes, he didn't come back until I emailed him saying that El Chup was gone. Lanzman wrote him a month ago. Maybe he can give us an update.
He melted down over a spoof of "The Human Centipede?" C'mon, that fucking movie was MEANT to become an object of spoofing. And while I'm at it- a very good spoof it was, too! Some people just piss all over everyone else's fun. (or should I say "shit?")
I thought it had more to do with his ordeal with cancer that was responsible for the change? It certainly changed his outlook on health care. But then, I wasn't aware that random, sudden meltdowns were his thing. I hope he comes back, but dude needs to chill out.
http://www.wordforge.net/showthread.php?t=86383 Interesting … and instructive, though not as it appears to be at first.
Probably. He had seemed to have mellowed out to me (before the meltdown thread), so between both our biases, he's probably always been a mostly well-argued poster who would sometimes get into flights of rage. But even when he was at my throat, his posts were always interesting. I hope very much that he will come back, and soon; I miss him.
I think he may have went insane. I mean, he used to be able to put together a cogent, logical argument. But when he went into gun grabber mode he lost his mind. We had a discussion that started with him saying that if you have $5 and a nail file you could turn an AR-15 into a full auto. When I pointed out this was completely impossible he went on some tangent about buying a bunch of expensive, illegal parts that pretty much had nothing to do with banning AR-15s, because it would likely be cheaper and easier to just buy/steal a military rifle. And from there he went into his "bump-fire" tirade that literally made him a punchline. Now that I think about it, do we know where he lives? Given his liberal views, fits of rage, and fascination with guns, I'm not sure I'd want to be in a shopping mall, school, or military base near him.
Sadly, piling on has become a fad around here, a clear indicator of individuality losing ground to group think. And a clear attempt to drive members away. Wordforge was better off with Demiurge participating.
He was concerned his kid would see the posted picture and while he has a right to parent as he sees fit, we can't...well, I don't think anyone besides him really wants...the Red Room to be turned into a child-safe environment. It's up to him to keep his kid off Wordforge, not us to make WF safe for his kid when this BBS is really meant as an adult environment. Plus, it was an image off a TV show. If it passed muster for a cartoon, it should be okay here.
I know the clip only lasts for a tenth of a second, but you'd think that a tenth of a second of me shitting in the potted fern outside the front door to the Red Room would be enough to tell any viewer that the Red Room is not the place for children, or even sane people. (Well, shit, you meant the picture that ended up in the opening credits of South Park. I thought you were being imaginative and thinking of Wrodfrodge as a television show the opening credits of which featured a montage of dramatically reenacted Red Room misbehavior.)
Yeah... his kid can see a lot worse by typing in any number of words into google. for fucks sake, did he really think the Red Room was ok for kids? Hell there are there that are labeled NSF, and nothing is really stopping someone from clicking them.
And those are only there to help out adults who are posting from public terminals or work. The only reason nudity is banned is the nature of the owner's job. We aren't really protecting anyone and certainly not kids. If you don't want your kids here, be a parent and keep 'em out because we are BBS staff and not nannies. Your kids are likely to be traumatized...lol.
