I'd keep 'em. Social media is the future (at the moment) and it might help keep the board alive.

I don't know about anyone else, but 9/10 times when I post a link to Facebook its through manually doing so, not hitting a share button on a site.

I think you're missing the point somewhat....which is now you don't have to pretend you're WF's saint in waiting.

Those of us with half a brain have known what you were throughout. Point is, now you don't have to pretend. You are free to troll it up with everyone else and abuse the rules clandestinely, just as you have done throughout but had to cover it up. :)

The very fact that you are, today, arguing against a more peaceful board tells us all we need to know. ;)

You have personally PMed me information which you asserted with the real indentity of a poster here, one who was not on WF. Please don't pretend you're holier than thou, because why would you do such a thing other than to try and use that information against someone? :jayzus:
    "Hardly ever"? Speak absolute volumes.

So you're setting out to abuse personal information at your discretion now that you aren't a mod? That's very nice of you isn't it? ;)

Really? You've not noticed the share buttons on youtube and blogspot and like that?

I can PM anything I want and it's not abusing anything. No rules about what's in a PM unless I harass someone.

The contents of my PMs are my business and no one else's.

It's good to see more of El Chup's version of bygones being bygones. Keep teaching us how to find the high ground!

Wow, you're entirely missing the point of the bygones be bygones suggestion aren't you? It's that irrespective of the rules, how about maybe people go back to a more decent era?

What you are saying is that as long as rules aren't broken then you are free to be as shitty as possible and, what's more, this was a principle you put into practice while you were still a mod. :jayzus:

Righteous all these years, yet within days of leaving the staff set up you confirm immediately what many have known for so long, that you have no moral compass at all. That it's always been about manipulation and what you can get away with while pretending the sun shines out of your arse. :jayzus:

Oh come on El Chup, do you have to derail every thread here? Yes, people thanked Tamar for years of service. So what. No reason to throw a hissy fit every time she posts anything but cat pictures. I sent her a cake once because she did me a huge favor. Am I suspicious of ass kissing too or are our fights enough to convince you otherwise?

    No.

I don't want Facebook putting two and two together and finding out who I am and then somehow someway that gets into public knowledge.

I remember no such time at Wordforge.

The place was founded, in large part, so people could be mean and nasty to each other.

The fact is, these things are things I did maybe three times in ten years and people like to pretend that I am sitting here creating databases, sending out informative PMs 3-4 times a day outlining everyone's personal life.

It's ridiculous and silly. No matter how much I deny it, no one believes it so I just not only go along with it, but exaggerate it more. Why not...no one believes the boring truth...my tamarchive skills have been pretty much confined to sorting spambots from real people trying to join WF and occasionally looking up articles and blogs and shit and finding out the truth in certain threads.

And garamet....why don't you tell the class the kinds of things you like to do behind the scenes? Trying to destroy someone's RL business, for example. Stalking people via linkedin...or how about you tell the class what happened to the new writer-in-residence who joined up and mysteriously disappeared? Or shall we just stick to the hypocrisy of you tut-tutting me and then privately asking me to search for information about someone you don't like?

Why have you just thrown garamet under a bus? You are having a fight with El Chu but then decide to toss in all this garamet info? What was the point? Couldn it not have waited until you at least had a fight with garamet??

Whose next? Might as well get it all out now you are on a roll

A YouTube video or blog entry is entirely different to a message board thread.

Serious question (and for once I'm not saying "serious question" as a preface to trolling): Has ANYONE EVER said to themself "Hey, this thread is interesting, I think I'll link to it on Facebook"?

Shit, the whole reason I come here is to have discussions I don't want to have on Facebook.

Not many Red Room threads. But there have been recipes or cool pics that would be worth sharing. Hopefully in the future if we can successfully generate some content in the outer forums there will be more worth sharing.

I can see some purpose to it. I might, for example, post a link to the Facebook Wordforge group. It would then show up in the newsfeeds of group members. Kind of a check this out if you haven't seen it, type thing.

Anc, I have some big concerns over those Facebook buttons. It's good you are trying to grow this place and all, but why don't you let the members decide whether they want to share WF with people over Facebook and Twitter. It's easy enough to post a link to a discussion if people want to do that and it doesn't have the added 'benefit' of Zuckerberg creepily identifying post with poster with Facebook member.

Aurora and Tamar have both posted info about these buttons and I myself have read up on it. The loaded handgun analogy mentioned above is quite apt, only you're give Facebook control over what uses that button has - now and in the future. I can't say I would ever see myself in a scenario where that shit is OK and I want to wholeheartedly be a part of.

That's nice. Again, beyond hypotheticals has anyone actually DONE this? Shooter posts a lot of the same photos here as he does on Facebook. But he doesn't post them at one site and link to the other site. I've actually posted recipes here and at Facebook. Often the same recipes. But I haven't ever went "you know, I want to share this omlette recipe, but I don't feel like retyping it. I don't even feel like cutting and pasting it. If only WF had a FB link button..." I'm not even pursuing the same audiences with these different mediums.

Gul you, of all people, should "get" this. Shoot, I've got you on "ignore" here because I can't stand your persona. Meanwhile we have some very good conversations on FB and I enjoy seeing what you and your family is up to.

Yeah, Aurora's info about the buttons got us looking into it. So far it seems all the links go back to 2010/2011. It appears that Facebook was sued over it in 2012, but not real clear yet what happened after that.

As to the cookies issues Tamar posted, that only applied to people that go to Facebook, not with the shortcut links.

Until we find out if they are still tracking non-members through the shortcuts or find a way to block that, we'll turn off the FB shortcut for the time being.

At the moment I doubt many have, but we've never had an effort to generate unique content on the board, encouraged people to share, or had the ability to easily do it. But as Lanz points out, social media is the future and it's worth at least exploring moving forward. We're trying to generate more content on the outer forums, hopefully good enough that people will want to share and thus drive in new posters.

what could make sense is to implement a system that lets people log in with their FB/google/whatever accounts. many, many sites do it and it's practical (though another data protection problem - yet one of their own choosing). just make sure they can choose a custom user name. people don't like to create accounts with challenge mails, CAPTCHA and whatnot. i personally use my completely unused twitter to log in and comment on various sites. i wouldn't if i had to make an account for the few times i do so
