Well, this thread certainly lead to an interesting debate on prayer, often the elephant in the room. I tend to agree though with @Demiurge . I'm sure the people who pray believe themselves to be doing good, but it should never form the primary source of support at the expense of other precisely because it is an unproven commodity.

I think that's quite an unfair extension of what he's saying. He is, like anyone else, entitled to take a view on the practical value of gestures of support. That doesn't necessarily equate to bitterness. Take it from me, there are many people on this planet, religious or otherwise, who profess goodwill and support, but when the time comes they come up short and self interested, with the people you least expect often being the ones who turn out to be the most genuine and caring. I don't think it's unreasonable that when such people reveal themselves as such we, as human beings, should be allowed to form a view on their prior indications of love and support and the methods by which they purport to show it.

A friends wife found out she had a softball size tumor in her head 3 weeks after the birth of their daughter. The main thing he says about prayer "they're great but can you come do laundry since I'm working and she can't move from being so tired from chemo and surgery...."

But please, disabuse yourself of the notion that just because someone gets sick, everyone else is obligated to turn themselves into housemaids. Most people have busy lives and their own families to tend to, which means your next door neighbor may not be able to drop everything and cook you dinner every night for the next six months.

Truth is, Demiurge is an angry, bitter twat with an exaggerated sense of entitlment. He's the angry homeless dude in the wheelchair panhandling in front of Wal-Mart, who thinks you owe him $5 because he's had a hard life. And if you don't give it to him he'll cuss you out and then try to stab you with a pocketknife. He's kin to the waitress, angry at her lot in life, who treats you like an annoyance if have to ask her to refill your water glass because she hasn't bothered to come by your table in the past half hour, but still expects you to leave a 20% tip. Sorry, not my fault you blew off school as a kid and are having to work in an industry which expects customers not only to pay for the food, but also subsidize the salaries of the hired help.

The sum of my support consisted in the amazing entertainment I provided as his intermittent sparring partner on Wordforge. Had I claimed as much as well as prayer as my contribution, I should deserve the same gratitude as I do now.

One can offer to help when a need is seen as well as pray. I'm not the most well versed on the Bible, but I know there are a few passages about charitable acts. Especially when Mrs. Demiurge also has a newborn to look after...watching the kid for an hour would do wonders, even for a mother whose husband is perfectly healthy.

After my wife's surgery, her sister offered prayers, and stayed with us for a week to keep her company during the day, and cook and help with the food shopping.
