Soooo ... am I to take from this that George R.R. Martin is an even bigger sadist than Joss Whedon?

Think I'm going to. Almost caught up to the end of season four. I'm surprised at how much I enjoy the show, given the massive disappointment I had with the first few episodes (quite evident in the OP).

My brother-in-law says there are some distinct differences between the books and the show, and that both have their good and bad points.

There have been three weddings on the show.

Two of them had multiple deaths.

One of them had one major death.

Where in this show are 'good guys'? Everybody with half an ounce of honor in them gets murdered in a horrific way sooner or later

I liked book one and two. Probably could skip over three and not even miss it  it just doesn't keep my attention  I have put it down and read other things several times.

Nah, she's kind of likeable. Sticking her little sword into people left and right doesn't really make her a protagonist. But she sure is among the few who aren't completely evil and/or depraved.

I don't know. Aria never amused me, but neither did Sansa. The boys had my heart

Sansa was a boring damsel for 4 seasons. At the end of the fourth she becomes a player. Good!

The Stark boys are all doomed (Robb ) Except for Jon. He'll come out winning.

I can't wait to see the next season and I want GRRM to release the next book because the cliff hanger at the end of Dance with Dragons was a real nail biter.

GRRM says he does that on purpose. No one is purely good or evil just like in real life.

The thing about this show is that one does not simply sit down and watch GoT. You need a considerable amount of background information to fill in the blanks and understand what's going on. I don't have the patience to read the books, but I have spent dozens of hours on the Wiki and other Internet sources, piecing it all together. And it's been worth it. GoT is far from perfect, but I don't know of any show on TV right now that's more entertaining.

Those who complain about the "bad guys" winning and "good guys" dying need to advance their moral philosophy beyond elementary school. That's where this show excels.

They are now saying the Winds of Winter won't be out this year. I recall reading that if he wrote at the same speed he wrote the other books, on average, then it would be out in April of 2015.
