Your link to a clearly biased article and news site doesn't count because it skews the facts. He doesn't claim to be libertarian dipshit, he claims to be a Republican, which he is.

It's hilarious that even as he announces, libertarians are distancing themselves from the man. Yeah, looks like Aurora nailed it.

So aside from "He's not Bush/Clinton," what's the appeal?

Only a nutjob would think a far left and known twister of facts like thinkprogress is in any way useful for candidate research.

Unlike other Republicans, he's made a better effort to reach out black communities. He has libertarian leanings. He's for school choice, lower taxes. He's against NSA spying. He's a strict constructionist. As for the rest, we'll see how he stands apart from the other Republicans. I feel he has the potential of having a broader appeal and he already has the Ron Paul followers.

You are just wrong. Rand Paul frequently declares himself to be a libertarian. The problem is, like most things he flaps his gums about, he is just full of shit.

That whole entire article only talked about what others think of Paul as a libertarian and provides absolutely no actual quotes by Paul. Furthermore, nothing in that article proves Paul to be a liar.

I like how his campaign slogan is "Defeating the Washington Machine". Now, running against Washington has been the default Republican position for 40 years, so there is nothing original about this, he is just yet another incumbent pretending he isn't an incumbent. The real question is where do they find the drooling idiot voters who keep falling for the same tired old nonsense over and over and over again? Don't these cretins ever figure out they have been used and then laughed
    at?

You don't seem to get the concept. The Washington machine he is referring to (had you watched the speech you would know this by the way) are the lobbyists, special interest groups and the career politicians. He has advocated for term limits on Congress, which I don't see a lot of other beltway boys doing. Being an incumbent doesn't make you a part of the inside the beltway establishment type. Had he served several terms, then maybe you could argue that. He's only served one term.

Charles Krauthammer had Paul pretty much pegged. He said that Rand Paul has some good ideas and does some good things. But those things that stand out like making at least "some" effort to appeal to minorities and other nontraditional GOP voters are not enough for the GOP establishment to back him.

Of course the establishment GOP won't back him, they've already started attack ads against him.

Speaking out in support of discrimination religious freedom (defined as it being fine if your religion is forced onto others at a state level) seems to be a prerequisite for standing as a Republican candidate up to now. I'm quite curious to see when the first socially moderate but fiscally conservative Republican contender will appear. A Republican speaking in support of gay rights would immediately alienate the religious right, but could stand to hold a fair amount of support.

Assuming of course that the "socially moderate, fiscally conservative" Republican voter actually exists when it counts.

Apparently, even the establishment GOP can distinguish between standard Republican crazy, and Paul's completely-over-the-top-batshit-crazy.

Or maybe they feel threatened by him and fear him. Hey, but if you think adhering to the Constitution and believing in Liberty is over the top crazy, then there's no hope for you.

So the far left is trying to paint him as an extremist while the republican establishment is trying to paint him as a RINO. Can't wait to see what happens when the rest of the field announces.

Personally I don't think there are many additions left to the field except Rubio and Walker.

Rubio will make his announcement next week. The left will predictably call him an extremist as they will with every republican that announces. The more interesting and less predictable reactions will be from establishment and tea party republicans.

Name one moderate Republican...and explain why you think he's a moderate.
