No. But I have had an encounter or two closer to real life before. Remember over at the TrekBBS when one of the members who was certainly no friend of mine there asked for my phone number. I gave it to him, he promptly called and guess what, he was not remotely offensive when he talked to me directly. Even commented later in TNZ about my being pleasant with him.

Sorry dayton but your desire to know everyone's name is probably not going to be happening. The US is never going to compel the release of names. It hurts victims much more than those who victimize. Do remember that the anonymity does assist both. For instance a child or victim of abuse can assume and change nicknames in a first obstacle to protect from stalking or abuse. You would be forcing them to expose themselves to their abuser, and exposing them IRL to anyone who happens to want to abuse them. Considering it is the abuser/bully/stalker who shows a willingness to harass and annoy, and that there are plenty of absolutely legal ways to do it you are really exposing the people who do not do these things to those who are willing to. Great idea dayton, but it comes off as thoughtless and potentially whiny because you want names of people without having to go through the hassel of investigation.

The second problem with your plan is economic. The moment the US compels message boards to identify everyone by name you immediately send business to other countries who do not abide by those rules. Considering some message boards make some profit and this is not internet piracy you probably would not have to look far to find a country where a board could get server space and keep anonymity. Given the reasons for anonymity you would probably kill most US services. Facebook has been hemmoraging users due to it's insistence you use a legal name on it's service. It is actually a new way to troll on facebook to report someone for using a nickname because facebook closes the account and forces the users to produce documentation of their real name. I know a few FB gaming people who have used methods like this to kill off competition for national boards on games linked to facebook accounts. It is generally a good idea if you belong to one of these games to use other methods for logging in due to the ease of FB account hacking and the way facebook has been culling it's spoofed accounts.

I advice parents of children I know never ever to use their real name on any service. It is just would lead a child molestor or even kidnapper right to your child. If the child gets bullied at school and their online identity is part of it then it becomes easy to drop the handle and participate again giving some ease to the abusers using their words to screw with them. It does not solve the problem completely, but with some supervision and educating the child about keeping their new name secret while participating with their friends you could make a dent. Kids probably do not get it as it seems they prize their online identity and it's reputation way too fucking much, but this may be a good time to start letting them know it is not the end of the world.

As for you dayton I would suggest if you are going to be the gigantic genocidal racist fuckwad you are, use a nickname. Your attachment to your name puts you in jeopardy, and it also makes it much easier to blackball you or have an employer find you via search. You may be self or unemployed so it may not matter, but for others they choice to be a dayton might make it really easy for anyone including lurkers to screw with them. I have to wonder how your suggestion would stop a lurker from screwing with you while rendering you completely impotent to figure it out.
