Fans being fans will always like this kind of masturbatory fan-service. I liked that Episode too, but it rides on nostalgia alone.

The original Enterprise is very much a product of its time. So will never see that again in any of the movies or the new show.
But I'm sure we will see a ship in Beyond that is close to a TOS-style ship (at least that's what I'm hoping for).

It's pretty but a completely illogical design. Always was, always will be. What makes sense from a purely realistic POV is the Voyager design or even the Defiant. I mean, what exactly are all the E's struts and the swan neck for? Just to make ways longer?

Form follows function. If we think that to its logical end, a sphere or even Borg cubes make the most sense.

I'm actually not a big fan. I think the belly is too fat, for one thing, and the nacelles are anorexic.

I always thought it was due to radiation hazards from the warp engines.

I know everyone has their own tastes, but to me this is the most beautiful design for the Enterprise. And these two are my favorite ship designs.

Any questions regarding the Enterprise's design (any incarnation) can be answered with the phrase "warp field dynamics." Remember, these are not reaction-drive engines . . . they're not rockets spewing thrust out the back. The nacelles generate a bubble of warped space around the ship which is then manipulated to cause motion at superluminal speeds.

    TL;DR: technobabble.

Err, no. I'm comparing your view of their place in the music halls of the future, to a hypothetical one of someone who didn't think much of Mozart when he was alive. Bit of a difference.

I love the look of that ship. It looks like a rugged, fast ship. Where the E is a graceful version

I gather you've not encountered much in the way of opera? Sex and violence - base instincts no? - are pretty much the order of the day. That seems to survive the centuries.

As for aesthetics, that's more of a personal thing, and what is considered 'good' now, may not be so in the future. Going back to opera, Carmen was a failure for close to a decade. You look at the Rolling Stones, a band whose songs will doubtlessly be being played for a looong time to come, play Sympathy for the Devil in the 1920's and you'd likely leave anyone listening aghast.

Now, not a massive fan of the Beasties, but Sabotage is much more than background noise. Personally, I like the tune. I imagine you listen to a few things I'd find to be utter crap, doesn't mean they have no value.

Don't mix popular with genius. Aphex Twin produces some of the most technically impressive music, he's not had many number ones, and Bjork is something of a musical genius, yet it's her more poppy tunes that have had the greatest success.

People like what they like. And with streaming, well, just as social media has turned into a bunch of siloed echo chambers, each thinking their little chamber is representative of the world, I suspect we'll see a similar thing with music (and entertainment in general) where the same tunes propagate through the ages as Spotify-enabled parents brainwash their kids into listening to pretty much what they listened to. We see some of this now with the Groundhog Day 70's and 80's (90's to some extent) revivials. Wouldn't shock me to find One Direction still popular a century hence.

I suspect you're sad people listen to them now. I was like that in my greasy haired teens when I figured the entire world really should stop listening to all that poppy shit and get their ears around some Slayer, thankfully I put away the grouchy inner-dictator and figured I've zero right in judging people's musical tastes. Well, outside of piss-taking! :D

So what I'm getting from the trailer is that time-traveling aliens have kidnapped the Beastie Boys, and it's up to Kirk and the gang to save them?

Be better if they had to go back and get Motorhead. Lemmy ripping his way through 'Killed By Death', aliens running in horror, with a single Klingon leaning against a wall laughing "we have misjudged these humans, there shall be peace." with the Vulcan ambassador weeping "Why? Why? Why could it not have been Adele? The Romulans would love her!"

After credit clip would be Devo doing a gig on a Borg cube, the entire collective wearing energy dome hats at a jaunty angle and chanting "when a problem comes along, you must assimilate it".

You know, if the whole point of getting a new Star Trek out in 2016 is because of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, doesn't it make sense to have the movie you know, actually SIMILAR in some ways to the original series rather than an (admitted) similarity to Guardians of the Galaxy.

I fail to see the difference. Mozart has qualities that Beastie Boys lack. There's a reason that it has a place in the "music halls of the future".

Ok - NuTrek is here to stay, tons of people enjoy it and "fans" like you are being completely marginalized because you didn't really matter in the first place.

    Really?

And what happens with "NuTrek" when after the movie in 2019, Chris Pine and company are not willing to make more movies?

"NuTrek" is a creative dead end for the franchise.

    Really.

Provide evidence this will happen. Do you know the cast of NuTrek personally?

You're wrong, again - what NuTrek has done is make more money for the franchise per movie than ever before. Star Trek Beyond will continue to do so. As long as it keeps making money you're getting NuTrek, Deez Nuts.

How do we know it's Kirk's choice for music? Maybe Spock is trying to understand Kirk better or he wants to understand earth's musical history?

As a Trek fan, I am disappointed by the trailer. But as a more recent Marvel fan who loved GOTG to bits, I want to defend that excellent movie against the comparison with this trailer. Adding a 20th century pop song to pictures of explosions is the equivalent of a GOTG cargo cult. Neither franchise can be reduced to this jumble of bland action scenes.

Pine and Quinto only made a commitment to be in one more movie. The one in 2019.

    What more do you need.

For that matter do you really think J.J. Abrams is going to make Star Trek movies indefinitely? He already pulled away from Star Trek Beyond.

Again, what more do you need.

I know in your little world contracts end and don't get renewed but in the rest of the world it's entirely possible to renegotiate new contracts. Especially when enough money is thrown your way.

    More than that.

I wonder if somehow, someway it would be possible to make a movie without JJ Abrams? I mean that sounds like crazy talk, right? As long as the franchise is generating a good enough return, it will continue with or without JJ.

    Again, more than that.

Your arguments are weak and embarrassing, Deez Nuts.

Never watched "Felicity" (which I'm sure is the show you're referring to) but I'm sure there were reasons beyond that admittedly hideous haircut. Namely, that it got moved from Tuesday to Sunday night programming. :brood:
