If Chamberlain had tried to go to war with Germany in 1938, he would have been out of office in no time. With WWI not even 20 years past, most Brits felt that if Germans wanted to live with Germans, why not?
They needed another year of Facts on the Ground to change their view.
    It wasn't Chamberlain's fault.

Just sayin': It's not a terribly apt metaphor.

As for Ukraine --- Trump or no Trump --- Europe (NATO whatever) is simply not willing to spill blood and risk WWIII over Ukraine. I'm very sorry for the Ukrainians --- they have suffered greatly from the Russians to the east and the Poles and Germans to the west.

Their best bet is some sort of Finlandization. The Finns were geographically screwed too, but came out of it smiliing.
The Urainians had best accept geographical fact and the fact of Russian Encirclement paranoia. And therefore resist the pull of the EU and NATO. And above all of US neocons.

One doesn't require intelligence to see Putin for what he is. Sadly, if one lacks intelligence AND the ability to see beyond one's own ego, then Putin finds you a most valuable patsy, Mr. President-Elect.

"Facts on the ground"? Are you absolutely serious? I guess the Remilitarization of the Rhine, Germany's participation in the Spanish Civil War, repression and murder of Jews, Gypsies and other "undesirables" and the farce that was "Anschluss" just wasn't enough. Also, I find it odd that NATO would shed blood for the Balkans and Eastern Europe(since they petitioned for, and recieved NATO membership), but not Ukraine, who also wishes to take its place as a member of Europe, but are denied the ability to do so. Obviously, Ukraine was lied to by both the US, and the UN, in regards to the Budapest Memorandum on security assurances, since neither lifted a finger to help with a blatant invasion by Muscovy.

I agree that it would be hypocritical for us to complain TO Russia about attempting to effect "regime change" (which they did, and by far more methods than just arranging for the release of some e-mails) BUT...

That does NOT mean we should quietly acquiesce to the regime they wanted. We can and should be very upset that Trump and his appointees are in bed with a hostile actor, regardless of our foreign policy history of such behavior.

Horseshit. Half the fake news (that's a swag) was Russia's. The other half were Africans that found a new trick for gullible conservative yanks. The third half were far right American sites.

Also Chamberlin needed to buy Britian some time to gear up the factories for war. Republicans can concieve of the concept that he didnt have a hanger of Spitfires and Hurricanes that would endlessly fly out after he opened up the door, those were still on the drawing boards.

The Spitfire and the Hurricane were both in active service in 1938. While the Luftwaffe enjoyed a qualitative superiority, France and Great Britain had numerical superiority in every field, air land and sea. The Chamberlain government seriously thought it could appease it's way out of another war and gave away pieces of other people's countries in an effort to further that agenda. Putin wasn't happy with just Chechnya/Ichekeria, so he took South Ossetia and Abkhazia away from Georgia. That wasn't enough, so he stole Crimea, and started "frozen conflicts" in Eastern Ukraine and Georgia. Now, he's backing a murderous dictator in Syria, bombing the shit out of non combatants(to further Assad and Iran's goal of population displacement) in the hopes of acquiring Tartus as a Mediterranean port for military vessels.

the disturbing thing is not that Trump exists
It's not that the Russians deliberately manipulated him into office
It's not even that white nationalists are emboldened by him
It's not that he's stacking his government with the same sort of person he is, rich assholes who don't care who loses so long as they get richer....

What is deeply disturbing is that anywhere from a quarter to half of adult Americans
    Just.
    Don't.
    CARE.

    THAT is the problem.

Oh, no, no, no, no. Rick, like his hero, wanted to make sure that the American electorate was fully informed. The result of that was unimportant. Rick said so himself.
So, he's all good with us electing a nutter that has the attention span of a meth-addicted toddler, and who gets into fights on Twitter with hack actors from SNL. Yeppers. The electorate was informed, therefore, they must have made the right decision, and if that leads to nuclear strikes on places like Syria and Saudi Arabia, that's just fine with him.

About that many Americans NEVER care about who is or isn't president. Lots of Americans HATE politics.

And this is probably a good thing in the long run. It shows that many Americans don't really worry that the skies gonna fall if one side wins or not.

In many ways their nonvotes are a vote of confidence in America.

    Thanksss ssso muchsss.

Nothing partisan, Obama leaves the world a more dangerous place than he found it, and my reply was to ecky's exact point on the topic. Hopefully Trump will be more effective.

As to the ot, well, harrumph, I disapprove, tsk tsk. I absorbed the info, any further comment is mental masturbation - something better reserved for others, I prefer the regular kind.
