Herman is just a play on words for German and a joke because Herman used to be a common German name. Thus characters like Herman Munster from the old TV show The Munsters.

Yes, but it was also a play on the word monster because all of the Munsters were monsters. Herman was just to show Frankenstein's Monster was German thus the name Herman Munster. Watch the reruns sometime and you'll get the joke.
