There's not much to do except watch it burn and hope the damage is reversible by the time he's done. Democracy is a wonderful thing, but it does mean that every once in a while you will encounter Trump like speed bumps.

One of the more rabid local conservatives I follow on twitter retweeted something I found very interesting.

Paraphrasing: It is obvious Romney loves his country and has strong moral convictions. Problem is he will sacrifice political convictions in service of first two.

Um...wait, what? The fuck is a political conviction? Sounds horrible. 'I dont care about facts or reality, I BELIEVE!' That kind of shit get's you Brownback's Kansas. How is ignoring that on any way a problem?

My thoughts exactly. Petraus disgraced his uniform and he's lucky not be in prison.

Blow me.....I jumped right on the fact that this is a very bad decision and gave my reasoning. Put down the broad-brush and back away slowly.

agree! When you value your political party over the good of your country you are FUBAR to the extreme. I didn't take an oath to defend the Republican Party - did you? I do have memory loss but I think I would have remembered that.

You proceed from a false assumption: That as SoS, Romney would have any ability to influence policy at all. Officially, he does, of course, but that doesn't mean Trump & Co. would listen to him. They may well not.

It also assumes that blunting Trump is better than allowing him to have free reign for a while. Suppose that an unfettered Trump is such a fuck up that in 2018, the Democrats are able to retake the House and Senate with enough of a majority that the entire Federal government grinds to a screeching halt. Almost nothing gets done between 2018 and 2020, when Trump is tossed out in 2020 and replaced by literally anybody. Sure, millions of people suffer during this time, and the economy takes a hit, but we're rid of him in 4. Maybe the Republicans come back with a decent candidate in 2024, or we muddle along with whomever wins in 2020 until 2028. Not an ideal situation, but hardly a worse case scenario, either.

Now, suppose Mitt is able to have an impact in the White House, such that the composition of the House and Senate stays roughly the same in 2018, and Trump is able continue with his policies to a large extent, then wins the election in 2020, and keeps fucking up the country until 2028 (Mitt having followed tradition and resigned in 2020). Potentially, millions more could be harmed by Trump this way, than if he fails fast.

Granted, this is all speculation, so who knows what could happen. Having been the "lone honest guy in the room" before, I can tell you that quite often it doesn't take long before the situation rapidly turns into, "Oh, fuck! I may not even be able to save myself when this shit goes down!" Were I Mitt, not only would I back away from Trump, but I'd put my energy into doing things for those who're likely to be harmed by Trump's policies. That way, my name would be unsullied, and I could be certain that I did some good for people during a time of need.

When somebody considers placing moral convictions and love of country above political convictions to be a problem ...

That says a lot more about the person making the judgment than about the person being judged.

Damn straight placing moral convictions and love of country as priority #1 (or at least higher than politics) is important, and the reverse is a big problem. That tells me the person making this judgement has their head screwed on straight - I wouldn't expect you to understand, so just keep mocking/being ironic/witty or whatever it is you do.

I think we agree on this. If I read it correctly, the person @Ancalagon was quoting said that placing morals and love of country above politics was a problem.

And the pick is ExxonMobil's CEO Rex Tillerson, who supposedly has a deal with the state-owned Russian energy corporation for $500 billion.
But don't worry, Mittens got something out of his meeting with Trump.

Well, at least the new Secretary of State won't need to check with any probation officer as originally posted.

    The OP was foolish anyway.

If Trump had really wanted Petraus as Sec. of State he could've simply pardoned him before nominating him (or after)

2018 is an off year election and dempcrats traditionally do poorly in off year elections. That is not to say it can't happen just that it is highly unlikely.

BTW how did you do in the election results prediction contest? I won twice and was runner up even during the least predictable election in living memory.

It depends. Generally, they do poorly when they're the party in power, but do better when they're out of power. How they'll fair in 2018 is too far away to guess, however.

    I didn't.
