I'm still grinding up Dilithium Mine Tier 1 so I can buy Advanced Fleet Warp Cores that will probably turn out to be disappointing.

    :sigh:

Is there a manual that can be printed out? I need to sit down and read it. Too much action in the first moments of the game. You're dropped straight into fighting.

Had a lot of fun fighting Borg (funny to leave a battle area with still active Borg Cubes to go chase other Borg though!) and Orion Pirates so I could rescue some chick who doesn't know how to fly a starship. :ramen:

Thantoskin is my name. USS Blue Lagoon is my current ship name.

The last manual I saw was hopelessly out of date. I don't know if they even include them in the packaging anymore.

    Dude. Seriously. Stop that.

    http://sto.perfectworld.com/news/?p=981151

Go on the "Public Service" channel. People will let you into their Tier V Starbase, Tier 3 Embassy, and Tier 3 Dilithium Mine so you can buy what you want.

Taking a principled stand and trying to solo it is one thing. But, what you're doing is lunacy. Either join an active fleet (My Fleet) or ask for access on Public Service.

I would invite you to our Dilithium Mine, but the project that makes Elite Cores available is 14 days long and we have 9 days left. The catch is to make sure your bases are provisioned. If I invite you to my base, anything you buy except for ships will use your provisions, so it costs my fleet literally nothing to let you come in.

Yeah...no. Sadly, there is no manual and the tooltips are often...lacking. My best advice is to learn by doing and play with others. Send @Dudley_Morton (Me) a friend request.

That kind of grind just isn't fun to me. :clyde:

By the time you get Elite Cores, they'll be two or three holdings down the line with Super Elite Cores. :nyer:

Like Sulu forgetting to release the break. You get duty officer mini-games later on.

Ok, so it's about 7 months now since I played. I logged in about 6 weeks ago and saw little improvement, but for a few missions. Worth going back in yet?

A new Featured Episode, which advances the story, drops on Thursday. Also, Season 8: The Sphere is set to drop shortly afterwards. It will feature several new things, not the least of which is a Dyson Sphere ship-based "adventure zone" to counter the three ground-based adventure zones (Defera, Nukara Prime, and New Romulus). It also introduces a new, to the game, set of bad guys. The Voth. I've done some testing on the Tribble Test Server (to earn the inevitable reward) and I have to say it's pretty nifty.

I like the game but I wish it wasn't so "grind" based. I've always looked at that as artificially extending the game.

I think that's pretty much every MMO. I've never played them myself, but my friends and family that play Final Fantasy and World of Warcraft have said that it literally takes years, with no workaround, to get "epic" or "ultra-rare" end-game gear. That's much, much faster in STO.

As for the game, Michael Dorn is back! STO's voice acting suffers at times, but some Trek regulars have given it a boost in recent years. Leonard Nimoy, Denise Crosby, and Michael Dorn just to name the ones on the top of my head. Since CBS considers STO the official, canon, continuation of the post DS9 story-line, it's also good to see that story move forward.

Yeah, I figured someone would say all MMOs are grinds. While true, some do a little bit better job of hiding it than STO. I mean seriously, after the first couple of days does anyone actually enjoy grinding marks or BNPs?

I actually like perfecting my build and working different tactics. Omega STF's are about raw damage output and absolutely nothing else. Heals and debuffs are only important in how they effect keeping your DPS up or actually increasing it. Or, to put it another way, you're not doing damage if you're dead.

That said, I'm about 20 STFs away from the "UFP Medal of Honor" accolade which is 300 successful Omega STFs. The Omega Reputation gear has also turned the game around for me. Thanks to my Mk XII gear set bonuses, the ground STFs have actually become my favorite part of the game. I also really enjoy that it forces cooperation unlike many of the space based STFs. If all five players aren't on the same page, the mission will be horrible and quite possibly uncompleteable. But, if all five are on the same page or those that aren't are willing to listen, it can be a very fun experience and there are some nifty extra rewards for doing them.

So they stole the script to the Stargate: Universe pilot? I played the episode.

STO = Ancient gate found and reactivated
SGU = Ancient address found and used on gate

STO = Gate area destroyed forcing evacuation through the gate
DGU = Base destroyed forcing evacuation through gate

STO = Survivors include military, scientists, and diplomats
SGU = Survivors include military, scientists, and politicians

STO = Gate arrives at base in an unknown location which leads to a large (possibly ancient) ship
SGU = Gate arrives at ancient ship in another galaxy

STO = Heroes commandeer ship to get home
SGU = Heroes semi takeover ship to try to get home.

Well I'll be... An open Beta for Macs.

Hadn't heard anything about this until today. I hope it opens the game up to a lot of new players.

Back again. Season 9 dropped yesterday. The Featured Espisode that comes with it is simply the best story STO has ever done. It's long by STO standards. It takes about 45-60 minutes to do. But, it's worth it because some huge and important things (story wise) happen in the mission. I also got some gratification because I've been waiting for four years on one simple little line of dialogue. I got it.

"All ships. This is Admiral Morton (my character), I am taking command of the fleet."

Still mulling over going back. Been a year since I left for SWTOR. STO still looks inferior.

Half of me wants to go back (I actually logged in last night and "ooohhh'd and ahhhh'd" at the ESD.

But then the other half reminds me that everything is a super tedious grind for marks/DOffs/Rep projects.

    Then I just say....meh.

Maybe I'll login and catch up on the story missions, but that will probably be it.

I've been playing this off and on, I don't quite get the reputation system, I have mark for the different factions(?), and I've been using them along with expertise and energy credits, but what is the purpose?

You have the five reputation systems:

    Omega (Borg)
    Nukara (Tholian)
    Romulan (Same)
    Dyson (Voth)
    8742 Counter Command (Same)

Each reputation system unlocks various passive traits and new gear as you progress through the ranks. Each system unlocks four possible ground passive traits, four possible space passive traits, and one active skill. For instance, there is a Tier 3 Omega Reputation trait called "Kinetic Shearing" that is a must for any ship using kinetic weapons (Torpedoes, Mines, Borg Kinetic Cutting Beam, etc.). The Nukara Reputation Tier IV space passive is arguably the best space trait in the game. The Traits are just another way to maximize your ship to your build and play style.

The gear is also superb. Some are obviously better than others, but I can't think of a single "bad" piece of reputation gear. This is only going to become more apparent as they add more and more systems to the game. Reputation gear is going to become more specialized. The 8742 Enhanced Bio-Molecular Photon Torpedo has knocked the Dyson Gravimetric Photon Torpedo off of it's perch as the best torpedo in the game. It's good against everything, but it's absolutely devastating to, and does nearly 1/3rd more damage versus, 8742 opponents.

I still log in from time to time to play a little Space Barbie, which is the true end-game in STO. It's just the same old abandoned queues that never pop because no one has any reason to play them. And the new queues? Ten minute, five man team "raids" that are faceroll easy. You can win, literally, using only one button (a spacebar macro).

The only challenge is the grind, which you don't need. You can easily beat the content in the game with common (white) level gear. So, you're going to spend months grinding ultra-rare (violet) or epic (gold) gear so you can beat the ten minute mission in eight minutes? Why? I maintain that if this weren't a Star Trek game, it would have died two years ago.

Edit: And it never fails whenever I log in. Uncle Albert is still there...plugging along...by himself. That has to be the most delightfully stubborn human on the planet.
