    Just watched "The Pilot".

Not a bad episode. Definitely quirkier than usual. I had a bit of a hard time following things for the first ten minutes or so, as it was all over the place.

Nonetheless, it's an interesting start to the season/series.

I certainly enjoyed it. Liked Bill a lot more than I thought I would. Episode plot and teased arc was interesting, although the whole Dalek stuff was one step too far towards silliness for me.

    So. What's in the vault?

I loved it. Bill was okay-but-not-great for me, everything else except the Dalek business was aces. (really didn't like how casually they "handled" a herd of Daleks isolating just the one - so much for the deadliest enemy ever)

Doctor as professor was great fun, his lecture and the various graphics were, I dunno, "bright" - fun, the sort of stuff I could imagine easily being done by Baker or Tennet. All the dialogue was crisp, the banter was funny (loved the bit about the TARDIS acronym) and Nardal really helps in that regard.

I'm pretty sure the vault will come up throughout the season in one way or another.

Oh, and I do wonder about the notion that the Doctor has supposedly been their fifty years or something - I like it when they imply a lot of time has passed, generally, but the episode was clearly not set in 2067 so....?

I'm not sure where the confusion lies. He obviously started there in 1967. Time travel, ya know.

...so whatever is in the vault was put there no later than mid-20th century. Which just so happens to be the timeframe where the Doctor hid another Gallifreyan doomsday weapon once before.

OK. Was that just a reboot?! Generally liked it. Did not like how they wasted 5 to 10 minutes establishing that Bill is a lesbian. Yay, congratulations. Sorry, good intentions and all but putting LGBT characters in a spotlight and treating them oh so very special just isn't helping. But the character did grow on me during the episode. I just hope she won't be ending up Galactic Superwoman like the last one. That 'growth' was just too much and much too confusing.

Where exactly did computer-says-no-boy come from? This guy is creepy even when he tries to act normal.

I do hope they'll conveniently forget the mega confusing mess DH has become in the last few seasons. This pseudo reboot seems to go in the right direction.

Enjoyed it, but as @Aurora said the "ooh, Bill's a lesbian" stuff was handled with all the panache, subtlety and verve of an Adam Sandler film. I mean, calling her "Bill" for starters... May as well have had her in dungarees, and switching her daily activities between playing rugby, welding cars and pipe smoking.

And as her bring the first homosexual full time companion. Pffft. Adric, people, Adric! :D

It was all a little too rushed, like Moffat has decided to abandon the overly complex for ADHD.

The vault is curious, but I have a suspicion it contains John Simm. I really hope it's not going to be that obvious, but something a little more left field.

Why would it be a reboot? No. It's not a reboot.

He was in the last two episodes. I think he's great.

Yeah, I love Nardole. I almost hope they don't tell us too much about him. I think the off-hand comment about humans was the first clear sign he isn't human himself, and that is both elegantly underplayed and a long overdue return to extraterrestrial companions.

And hell yes he's creepy. Very enjoyably so.

well that would mean that while various previous Doctors were repeatedly saving the Earth during that time he was just sitting quietly grading papers in his university office...

Well, since he'd already saved the world he'd hardly go help his earlier selves.

Student: "Doctor! The worlds being invaded..."
Dr: "Boring. Boringboringboring. I HATE repeats, wasn't fun the first time around, now it's not only not fun, but is also not interesting because I've already seen the end. Boring. Now I've found this show, it's about a talking sponge called Spongebob, far more entertaining than watching one of my less interesting versions. Probably the one with the spoons. Really, spoons. Who takes a perfectly good way of eating ice cream and tried making a tune with them? Me, apparently. Well, used to. Now, guitars. That's where its at."

now that I think of it, if the 50 years HAD started in 2017 there would probably be a few previous episodes where the Doctor has saved the world during that time frame too.

Brilliant! You've got him/them down exactly. :techman:

BTW, Nardole is one of River Song's exes. He was the guy in the gigantic lobster carapace:

No, I don't think he was one of the exes (unless I missed a line). He was caught by one of the exes in that ex's exosuit, but has since been freed by the Doctor. He's ex-ex's-exosuit.

The Christmas special will be a team-up with the first incarnation played by the guy who played Hartnell in the 50th anniversary biopic about the making of the first episode.
It'll loop back to "The Day Of The Doctor", showing it from Capaldi's point of view.

Yeah Nardole (Matt Lucas AKA apparently "computer says no guy" except that was his comedy partner David Walliams, Aurora!!! Matt was the "Yeah but no, but..." girl...) was introduced in "The Husbands of River Song" as River's employee, got beheaded and integrated into a deranged cyborg, then apparently the Doctor reunited him with his body to keep him company after River's final trip to the Library. He accompanied the Doctor for the adventure seen in "The Return of Doctor Mysterio", where it was seen that he can fly the TARDIS - though only about as well as the Doctor, since he had an unintended stopover that led to him briefly becoming Emperor of Constantinople, where he ruled "firmly, but wisely".

Good ep - the description for ep2 is giving me visions of Paradise Towers and The Happiness Patrol, which DenOfGeek also spotted...

Heard brief mention today of the idea of Ross Noble being the next Doctor and now I'm going to be disappointed when it doesn't happen.

His Twitter says his "new job", will be announced tomorrow, so if it's Doctor Who, we'll know pretty quick.

Yeah. No idea if he could do serious well, but he'd fit with the idea that the BBC want a more zany Tennant type.

Edit: and already confirmed not to be him.

    So, ep 2?

:) from me. Low-key but effective - having the Doctor and Bill spend an extended period exploring without any other (speaking) characters was a good way to reinforce their relationship and felt very old-school Who. Resolution was a bit rushed and faked me out a bit:

The dialogue and interactions between The Doctor and Bill were very good, and even the general plot wasn't too silly, but I am getting sick of deliberate cheese and corn. Emojibots? Really? *sigh*

Social commentary: we'd have thought it was pretty fucking stupid too if you told us as young adults that kids in 2017 would have entire text conversations in emojis/emoticons/that goddamn poo thing. Apparently, there's an emoji movie in production, with Sir Patrick Stewart voicing the poo thing...

I'd put a rolleyes smiley here, but that would undercut my point.
