There is nothing sudden about the CSU's position; they had it for years, and it is one of the reasons why this coalition was so hard to build.

The desire to have border checks at the border and to actually start rejecting people who claimed to not have their documents (a large percentage of the migrants intentially throw away their documents because they intend to lie about where they are from and what their name really is) is supposedly new and causing the big problem with Merkel. Those polices are now polling around very high in Germany I am told.

In case anyone is interested in reality: A Chancellor can only be removed by Parliament by what our Constitution calls a 'Constructive' vote, which means that they have to do it by voting in a replacement in her stead. So it is not enough for her to lose the ruling majority; rather, a new majority has to be assembled around a new head of government. At which point, nobody in the CDU will be prepared to go along with anyone the then-traitorous CSU proposes, and nobody else has a majority anyway.

I think it is quite likely that this coalition will not serve out its term, but it won't fail over this and not in this way.
