The 12.3% number is for NYS, not NYC.
By that same token though, Iceland isn’t really the best country to draw from in terms of analyzing CFR or IFR, as they have only had 10 deaths to date, and around 1800 infected.

The fatality rate is very dependent on demographics. Not just in terms of old vs young, but also black vs white. Last I checked black people comprise around 25% of deaths in the US from Coronavirus, while only comprising 13% of the population.
But I absolutely agree that there is no need to make it appear worse than it is. A disease 3-4 times worse than the flu is plenty bad.

No, they have 1800 cases, not infected.

They're still waiting on their test results, but we've been texting this week and the symptoms he describes sound a helluva lot like they have a mild case of the virus. My friend in Seattle who tested positive a few weeks ago had the exact same symptoms. :(

Not trying to make light of it if people you care about are sick, but honestly, I wouldn't sweat it unless they have some underlying issue that puts them at greater risk. The real mortality rate for this virus appears to be minuscule, less than half a percent for anyone relatively young, and healthy. I think a shit ton more people have had it and gotten over it than will ever be recorded statistically. I know three people myself who had it (based on symptoms), got over it, and never even went to the doctor. One of them did an antibody test afterwards and confirmed that he did, indeed, have it, although it barely affected him at all. He basically got plugged up and lost his sense of taste and smell for about a week.

My concern isn't so much if I have it, but if I have I don't want to give out to someone else. And the possibility of giving to someone who may have a condition that could make it fatal to them.

But that flies in the face of the @Marso Doctrine: "I got mine and fuck the rest of you monkeys."

    Same here.

My friend's daughter has Down syndrome, which makes her more vulnerable to the virus because of her immune system. :(

The only "good" thing about this if it does turn out that they've got the COVID is that it might be a wake-up call for some others in our circle of friends who constantly try to downplay the seriousness of the virus. :brood:

At work, we required to take daily temp checks, along with a screening. One of the guys had been skipping out on them both, and I had other people asking me about it. I told them that I didn't know if he was or not. But I did bring it up our manager, I knew he would reach out to him and remind him that it's not optional. So that guy is pissed off at me for that. What he doesn't realize is that if it got to HR or or to the wrong person, his employment could be terminated.

I don't really care if he's mad at me for it, I'm more concerned on making sure everyone else stays healthy. One of the guys who I work with, brought that up, we were talking with our manager about what we need to do and follow to stay heathy.

He said "Ed is really good on that, and making sure we all stay safe. He's always making sure everyone has what they need.".

I realize that one person could get all of us sick, and in turn get our clients sick. Which could easily be 30-40 one of us could infect in one week

I saw more people wearing masks when I went to the store yesterday, but still nowhere as many as I did at the peak. One thing that infuriated me was I saw a woman in nurse's scrubs who wasn't wearing a mask. I couldn't make out the info on her ID badge that she had on, or I would have called her employer and given them what for.

wife (she's a nurse at a metro ATL hospital) says coworkers (nurses and techs) are being careless in the community. 2 people she works with (out of maybe 20?) have been infected and taken 14 days off. They work on the oncology ward with immunosuppressed patients. Prior to being infected they were chatty about going to bars and events without any masks or social distancing.

There's no accounting for it other than they're young and immortal.

Okay, so the mayor of Washington DC, who less than two weeks ago was shoulder to shoulder in a crowd of 'protesters' on the street, is now on TV advocating for everyone to celebrate the 4th of July INDOORS and 'properly social distance.'
Is anyone 'getting it' yet? [IMG]

An intelligent response to a pandemic? Yeah, we get it. You don't. But we'd be happy to 'splain it to you in nice, small words.

But you need your fireworks and public displays of God Bless Murica hoopla, or you'd cease to exist, amirite?

COVID-19. NINETEEN! Think about it. Guess what? Covid-20 is going to happen. So is Covid-30, and Covid-fucking-50! Or something else with a catchy, scary moniker, like H1-N1, SARS, or Bird-Flu. People better decide how they want to live, and soon, because the people that are driving the panic don't want a free world or your best interests: they want Huxley's 1984.

If the bus driver tells you to put on a seatbelt, it's generally a good idea to listen. But when a cop boards the bus and starts shooting people, maybe it's okay to get up to try to take them down?

Okay, here's language you might understand. The passenger cabin is reporting that when you stand up, the heat mysteriously goes up in the cabin by 25 degrees until you sit back down. So you stay sitting down throughout the flight, right? But now an engine has flamed out and the extinguish switch is above and behind you out of reach from the seat. Do you sit there to keep everyone comfortable, or stand up to go put out the fire?

As I understand it, the rule is "eight hours from bottle to throttle." If you multiply that by four bottles, does that mean @Marso can't - in conscience - fly for 24 hours after he's drained the last one and passed out?

Oh, wait. @Marso and "morally" don't belong in the same sentence...

If I am not mistaken, Marso himself has explained to us in the past that he is not allowed to drink alcohol for 24 hours before flying. I could be wrong about this, because it has been quite a few years, but it's what sticks in my mind.

It stuck with me because, even though I don't think much of his politics, I have always considered him the most authoritative person with whom I have had any contact (albeit only through Wordforge...) on anything having to do with planes and flying.
