And how do you incentive a course (or regime) change? (Hint: by making individual Russians' lives miserable.)

Also, this "prodigy" is a twat. He said Russians will be wracked with guilt for decades, and in the same breath, basically shrugged his shoulders and said they couldn't have predicted this and there's nothing they can do.

A lot of prominent Russians are trying to have it both ways. Alex Ovechkin when asked if he condemned the war said something like, "I hope it will all be over soon." :garamet:

Being in the KGB doesn't necessarily translate to being great at hand-to-hand fighting.

Plus Musk is actually trained in martial arts.

I'd say that it's at least possible that Musk could take Putin.

Go to Youtube and do a search for "China Economy" and you'll find plenty of stuff predicting that China's economy is either A) About to go in the shitter, or B) Already in the shitter. I'm not vouching for either one, however, if there is at least some truth to those claims, helping out Putin may not be as easy a choice for China as it might seem. :corn:

FOX journo injured in Ukraine. This might be expected to change their tune, but he IS British so they likely don't think that much of him.

Also, the last sentence comes as a surprise to anyone familiar with FOX, who normally just make shit up:

Which doesn't really mean anything. Assume, for the sake of argument, that she was able to fuck off to a safe place, no lawyer worth their salt is going to admit this. Because that would put both of them at risk.

I admire her courage, but even if she survives, things are going to be very unpleasant for her.

It depends upon where she resurfaces and when. Can't imagine life will be too bad for her if she shows up in Kansas after Putin's been treated to the Mussolini lamp post special (aside from the horror that anyone has to experience simply by being in Kanasas, of course).

Maybe. The problem is that democratic institutions need to take, and that's not easy in Russia. Otherwise we'll just fund a new group of oligarchs.

The US did provide $28 billion to the former countries of the Soviet Union from 1992-2007. But most of that money came for security - no, not arms sales, but agreements to help nuclear non-proliferation, when there was a high level of worry that Russia or one of it's former clients would sell nuclear weapons on the open market.

In that time frame, about $4 billion went to democratization efforts, and another $4 billion to economic aid. Should have focused more on democratization programs.

But I'm pretty damm glad there aren't a lot of loose nukes running about. It's amazing that went as well as it did.

Perhaps. Certainly, it sounds like their elite forces have taken a massive hit. As for the rest, well, it really depends upon what types of units got hit the hardest. Taking out a column of supply forces can have a far larger impact than taking out a column of fighting forces. Presumably, the regular Ukrainian forces are focusing on the elites and supply columns, as that'd blunt Russian efforts to advance, while the irregular forces could just whack whoever happened to be closest. Good for psychological impact.

Is it a coincidence that there are hints of "substantial progress" in the Russia/Ukraine negotiations?
