It's worse than that - 'there is no difference between Ukrainians and Russian ethnically. Obviously they aren't committing a genocide.'

Russia already has committed a genocide in Ukraine, the 2nd worst of the 20th century, the Holdomor.

The point of that was to get rid of ethnic Ukrainians and replace them with Russians.

Candace Owens was also born in 1989.

I think she's just jealous her peers have done better for themselves.

Actually, didn't proto Ukraine come first in the form of Ruthenia?

I didn't just happen to know that off the top of my head. I happened to recently watch a video on Youtube about the history of Russia.

    It's pretty convoluted.

My understanding is that the current nations of Russia, Ukraine, and Belorus all come culturally from Kievan Rus.

Kievan Rus contained parts of all three modern nations.

Ruthenia is specifically part of western Ukraine. It can be considered to predate Russia, though that depends on which polity you are talking about. The Grand Duchy of Moscow, certainly the unifying force of the later Russian Empire, was formed about the same time. Is that Russian?

What's worse, the term Ruthenian is a European term for Kievan Rus, and itself when translated means 'Land of the Rus.'

Certainly culturally and politically there is a different faction of Ukrainians that look to Europe instead of Russia. This is because for 400 years they were part of the more Western facing Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and then Poland.

What's more, Ukrainians were ethnically cleansed in the Holodomor, and the Soviets attempted to destroy that culture by banning teaching it or the Ukrainian language in Ukrainian schools. They replaced Ukrainians with Russians in Crimea in a concerted effort to have a Russian majority there, as the port is essential to their commerce. At least, it was when they were doing commerce.

So the Ukrainians have a damn good reason to want to have nothing to do with them.

A good longer form, better at explaining the intricacies, is here: https://www.institutegreatereurope....rus-the-memory-war-between-russia-and-ukraine

To anyone who pays attention to the intelligence community, this is fairly unprecedented. I can't stress that enough. A large group of Western nations have done a complete end-run around the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) -- the organization that sets global standards for combating financial crime -- and formed their own task force to deal with Russia.

    Why?

Because the Russian Federation is a FATF member and the FATF has been wringing its hands over the past two weeks about what to do.

Here's the news releases from the U.S. and Canadian Financial Intelligence Units:

    https://fintrac.gc.ca/new-neuf/nr/2022-03-16-eng

Now if only the United Nations would get its shit together and kick Russia off the Security Council...

I used to say, in response to that old "which candidate would you rather have a beer with" question, that I didn't want to have a beer with Hillary Clinton, I wanted to have coffee with her so that I could soak up everything she had experienced.

But this new, post-electoral career, don't-give-a-flying-fuck-anymore version of Hillary would be super fun to get drunk with.
